Wilfred John Pellegrin, 74, a native of Terrebonne Parish and resident of Houma, died at 4:05 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, 2010. Visitation will be from 6 to 10 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to funeral time Monday at Falgout Funeral Home Chapel. Service will be 11 a.m. in the chapel, with burial in St. Francis de Sales Cemetery No. 2. He is survived by two sons, Timothy John and Eric James and companion, Monique Eharb; one daughter, Carmella and husband, Bubba Strickland; two sisters-in-law, Sue Pellegrin and Laura P. Giroir; one brother, Allen and wife, Juanita Pellegrin; five grandchildren, William Strickland, Ashley and husband Andy Voisin, Megan and husband Matthew Musson, Sharlie Pellegrin, Jarrett Pellegrin and Lindsey Dufrene, and three great-grandchildren, Kylie Burson, Jovi Voisin, Mikaela Dufrene and Mattie Musson. He was preceded in death by his spouse, Mercedes Margaret Dufrene Pellegrin; his parents, Oscar Sr. and Pearl Bergeron Pellegrin; four brothers, William, Herman, Ruben and Oscar Pellegrin and one sister, Margaret Hebert. He was a parishioner of St. Bernadette Catholic Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Police. Before beginning a 36-year career in law enforcement, Pellegrin served almost three years in the U.S. Army, including one year stationed overseas. After completing active duty in 1957, he began work with the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Department as a uniformed patrol deputy until 1968. In July 1968 he began work with the Houma Police Department Uniform Car Patrol and was promoted to Patrolman First Class in 1970. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1978 and Lieutenant in 1981, serving as a detective and head of juvenile division. He achieved the rank of Captain in 1988, assuming the duties of watch commander and public relations officer, and served on the board of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council. During his years of service, he coordinated the efforts between the Houma Police Department and the Red Ribbon drug awareness campaign and is still ongoing in public schools.
