Upon her return to Napoleonville with her husband and young son, she became a devoted wife and mother. Although she worked as a secretary for Leonard's insurance business, her main focus was caring for her family. Shirley was a devout Catholic woman. She attended Mass almost daily, prayed for everybody and prayed the rosary every day of the week. She was heavily involved in the local religious education organization and taught catechism to the first communion class of St. Anne Church for more than 30 years.
