Gros, much loved and admired father, husband, teacher, coach and mentor, passed away Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 in Houston, Texas. A Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux. He is survived by his wife, Glynda; son, Darren and wife, Jennifer; daughters, Lauri Abruscato and Michelline Burmeister; grandchildren, Remy Gros, Lawrence Abruscato, and Mason, Breanna, and Zachary Burmeister; sister-in-law Jeanette Gros; and numerous nieces and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, A.J., Harold, Oran, and Denis Jr., all veterans of World War II; and sisters, Marie Naquin and Cora Kramer. Larry was the youngest of seven children born Oct. 18, 1935, to Denis and Elodie Gros in Thibodaux. He was a graduate of Thibodaux High School and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics and education from Southwestern Institute. He earned a Masters' degree in mathematics and education from LSU. Larry was also drafted by a professional minor league baseball team, but declined in order to further his education. Larry coached football and taught in Louisiana and Texas high schools for more than 40 years, with a brief stint as a CFO for a directional drilling company in Youngsville. Larry was recognized and honored with the coveted "Christa McAuliffe Award for Teaching Excellence" in 1991, as well as being named Teacher of the Year several times over the course of his illustrious career. Larry loved the science of mathematics and the strategy of football. He taught, mentored, and coached thousands of young teenagers over his lifetime. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Mayde Creek High School Math Scholarship Fund. ======================
