He was a native of Kisatchie, La and resident of Houma, LA. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2014 from 6:00PM until 9:00PM at Chauvin Funeral Home, Inc. and Friday, May 9, 2014 from 9:00AM until service time at First Baptist Church of Houma, at their new location at 3863 W. Park, Houma, La. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, May 9, 2014 at 11:00AM at First Baptist Church of Houma. Burial will follow at St. Francis de Sales Cemetery #2. He is survived by his loving wife, Janet Bates, step mother, Lenda Bates; son, Lane Bates and wife Anne daughters, Kayla Guerrero, and Karen Arnold and husband Dane brothers, James Ray Cobb sisters, Roberta Noland, Debbie Schultz, Teresa Ott grandchildren, Gina Arnold, Matthew Arnold, Austin Arnold, Chloe Arnold, Breanne Arnold, Nathan Arnold, Connor Bates, Sage Guerrero, Hunter Bates. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Leon Bates and Lola Dowden Bates Cobb brother, Robert Bates sister, Barbara Ann Bates. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Houma. Ralph retired after 25 years of coaching basketball and teaching in Terrebonne Parish. In 2006, he was inducted into the Terrebonne High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He also spent many years working in the oil and gas industry. Ralph was an avid outdoorsman who had a true love of fishing and hunting. He was devoted to his family and enjoyed sharing his love of sports with his grandchildren through cheering them on to many victories. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be dearly misssed by all who knew him. ======================
