Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until funeral time Saturday at Samart Funeral Home in Houma. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with burial in Rogers Cemetery in Houma. Ruby was a devoted mother of Anthony Bryan Candies, to whom she dedicated her life. Anthony was born with a severe case of Cerebral Palsy. Ruby supplied the physical strength, the medical knowledge, the immense emotional fortitude, and the spiritual guidance which was necessary for Anthony to lead a very special life for 58 years. She is survived by her sisters, Gloria Wilson, Deanne Stringer, Dolena Robert, Patricia Friloux, and Cathlyn Rome Oubre; and brothers; Cyril O. Matherne Jr. and Glenn M. Matherne Sr. In addition to her parents, Cyril Sr. and Frazie Dufrene Matherne, Ruby was preceded in death by her brothers, Ray, Carrel, Lee, and Harry Matherne Sr. Ruby was the oldest daughter of Cyril Sr. and Frazie Dufrene Matherne, her loving parents, for whom she also provided excellent care in their last years. Ruby was one of 12 children, six girls and six boys. Ruby promoted her herbs and her healthy lifestyle throughout her family and her neighborhood, long before their importance was generally recognized. Ruby used her telephone, her pen, her limited finances, and her religious fervor to make life better for those who were sick, afflicted, homeless, and less fortunate. "Miss Ruby" was Florence Nightingale incarnate. A celebration of Ruby's life was held in Grand Bois for her 90th birthday in October, 2013. Ruby's family would like to extend their sincere thanks to her caregivers and friends at Maison De' Ville nursing home. Samart Funeral Home in Houma is in charge of arrangements. ======================
