She was 76. Michèle was born June 10, 1938 in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe in the French West Indies and moved to Thibodaux in 1945. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until funeral time on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014 at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. at the church. Michèle is survived by her three children, Fredéric François, of Thibodaux; Véronique François, of Austin, Texas; and Chantal François Bailliet and husband Ian Robert Whittle, of New Orleans; four grandchildren, Marielle and Julien Glasse; and Aidan and Liam Whittle; two brothers, Jean Bailliet and his wife Maria, of Houston; and Robert Bailliet and his wife Betty, of Magnolia, Texas; and her sister Denise Bailliet Canat, of Aix-en-Provence, France. Michèle was preceded in death by her parents, Victor Joseph Bailliet and Olga Blanc Bailliet, of Thibodaux. Michèle started teaching economics at Nicholls State University in 1966, launching a nearly 50-year long career at NSU. She became head of the department of economics in 1974, then director of exchange programs in 1980. She enjoyed welcoming international students to study at NSU and took these students into her home and family. Michèle’s interest in exchange programs extended beyond NSU. She served as president of the Loudun-Thibodaux Twinning Committee and actively encouraged Thibodaux residents to travel to France and helped welcome many Loudunnais here. She considered Loudun her second home thanks to the great friends she made there. Michèle moved often between France and Thibodaux and taught economics and directed exchange programs at several schools in France, including the Université de Poitiers and the École Supérieure du Commerce Extérieur in Paris. Perhaps because of her own wandering, she was a frequent welcomer of travelers, both French and non-, and many stayed in her home and became lifelong friends. She was a member of the Hermanas and the Women’s Club, and enjoyed entertaining friends and family at her house and in her beloved garden. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Victor J. Bailliet Scholarship Fund. Checks should be made payable to Nicholls State University with Victor J. Bailliet Scholarship in the memo line and sent to: Scholarship Office, P.O. Box 2005, Nicholls State University, Thibodaux, LA 70310.
