Cangemi, 80, a native of Thibodaux and resident of St. Francis Villa in River Ridge, passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend visitation 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home at 1600 N. Causeway Blvd. in Metairie and from 9 a.m. until funeral time Friday at St. Rita Catholic Church at 7100 Jefferson Hwy. in Harahan. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Metairie. He is survived by his daughter, Maria Claire (Stephen Ledet); son, Anthony (Brandy); grandchildren, Adam, Diana, Anthony Jr., Christopher, Daniel, and Sam; sisters, Marion Cangemi Dennis, Nita Cangemi Serpas; twin sister, Dr. JoAnn Cangemi; nephews and nieces, Dr. Michael Dennis (Mary), Mary Dennis Nehrbass (Seth), Ann Serpas Hatchitt (Curtis), and Dr. Martha Serpas; numerous great-nieces and nephews; devoted family friend, Linda Aucoin; and his former wife and the love of his life, Diana Haddad Cangemi. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Rosa Cangemi; and brother, Anthony J. Cangemi Jr. Sal was a graduate of Thibodaux College and attended Spring Hill College. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Loyola University. After a career as a chemist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, he attended Loyola School of Law where he earned his Juris Doctor degree. After practicing several years as a patent attorney with the federal government, he went into private practice and opened Elmwood Federal Savings and Loan, serving as its Chairman of the Board. He continued to practice law until his retirement in 2002. Sal was a member of the Jolly Jeffs for more than 40 years, up until his death. He had been an active member of the Harahan Lions Club and the Italian American Marching Club for many years. He also enjoyed membership in several carnival clubs over his lifetime including Endymion and Okeanos. Sal was a parishioner of St. Rita of Cascia Parish, and enjoyed attending Manresa Retreat Center with his son. His favorite times, however, were spent around a table with his family sharing a meal. The family appreciates the care and attention provided to Sal throughout his brief illness at Ochsner Hospital's ICU and during his final days at The Sanctuary at Passages Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to Manresa Retreat Center, Convent, Louisiana; St. Joseph's Abbey, Covington, Louisiana; or St. Rita Church, Harahan, Louisiana.
