BARBARA JANE LOFTON: Sixty-seven years, five months and 20 days ago, God ordained the birth of Barbara Jane Lofton on Wednesday, March 31, 1948 in Biloxi, Mississippi on Keesler Air Force Base. She was the fifth of six offspring born to the parentage of the late Elijah, Sr. and Hazel Lofton. Her older siblings were Ann, Elijah Jr., Joyce and Shirley; the younger sibling was Theresa. Barbara confessed her belief in the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at St. Paul Baptist Church in Lafourche Crossing, according to her faith she was baptized by the late Reverend Emmanuel White. Barbara received her formal education in the Lafourche Parish Public School System. She studied nursing at South Louisiana Technical College in Houma where she became a licensed certified Practical Nurse. Barbara earned an Associate in Nursing from Nicholls State University in Thibodaux; a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Southeastern Louisiana State University in Hammond; a Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration in Mental Health from Louisiana State University in New Orleans; and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Nursing from Southern University in Baton Rouge. Barbara was the co-owner of the former Good Shepherd in Home Health Care, Incorporated of Thibodaux, Louisiana. Up until her illness, she was a Professor of Nursing at Clayton State University in Morrow, Georgia. In years past, she taught at Nicholls State University and Louisiana Technical College. Because of her dedication to the field of Nursing education, she received several awards to include; LE Fletcher Community College Teaching Excellence award in 2011, Nicholls State University Teaching Excellence award in 1999, Induction into Nicholls State University Nursing Honor Society in 2002 are among many that line her bookcase. Barbara was active in multiple professional organizations to include Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Sorority, National Association of University Women, Louisiana Nurse Association and Nurses Caring for our Patients are just to name a few. She was dedicated to her role in the community and volunteered with the Christian women prayer group, Susan G. Komen Foundation and Adopt a Grandparent volunteer. In her leisure, she enjoyed traveling, reading, shopping, collecting dolls and unique things. Barbara departed this earthly life for her eternal home on Sunday, September 20, 2015 with her family at her bedside at Emory University Midtown Hospital in Atlanta. Visitation at Williams and Southall Funeral Home, Thibodaux, LA on Friday, September 25, 2015 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. Visitation from 8:00am to Religious Services at 10:00am at Eagle Wright Baptist Church, Gray, LA. Burial in the St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery, Thibodaux, LA. Beloved family members that preceded her in death were her parents, Elijah Lofton, Sr. and Hazel Thombie Lofton Every; and sister, Ann Lofton. Memories of her are forever embedded in the hearts of her daughters, Cassandra Burrell, Sonja Landry, Angelle Lemieux and Misty Landor; siblings, Elijah Lofton, Jr., Joyce Lofton Julien, Theresa Lofton White, and Shirley Lofton Blackshear; son- in-law, Eddie Landry, III; brothers-in-law, Robert Julien and Boatman Ronald White; 9 grandchildren, Christopher and Freddie Burrell, III, Morgan Harris, Brian, Krystal, Kelly, Ambrosia, Kaelin, and Lamar Lemieux; 2 granddaughters- in-law, Salenthia Burrell and Letasha Lemieux; 5 great-grandchildren, Rain Burrell, Le’Monte, Samh'ya, Julyian and Asia Lemieux; one God – child, Kris Shontana’ Johnson and many nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and neighbors.
