Matherne, 85, a native of Gheens and a resident of Houma, passed away on Friday, March 17, 2017. Visitation will be held from 9 AM until service time on Tuesday, March 21 at St. Hilary of Poitiers Catholic Church in Mathews. A military service will be held at 10 AM and a Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday at the church with burial to follow in St. Hilary of Poitiers Catholic Church mausoleum. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Elsie Plaisance Matherne; 3 children, Jeffrey, James, and Catherine Matherne; sister, Pearl Chiasson; 9 grandchildren, Aaron, Nick, Seth, Tim, Taylor, Mallory, and Bailey Matherne, Claudia Bourgeois, and Megan LeCompte; and 10 great-grandchildren, Macy, Payton, Brandon, Alex, Abby, and Adeline Matherne, Cohn, Trace, and Finley LeCompte, and Ava Bourgeois. He was preceded in death by his son, Bryan Joseph Matherne, 2 grandsons, Bryan Matthew Matherne and Lyle Jacob Matherne; parents, Henry Matherne, Jr. and Vitilas Matherne; and siblings, Irvin, Coylon, and Elta Matherne, Alverta Danos, and Gladys Gilbert. M.J. enlisted into the U.S. Army on Febuary 18, 1952. As a sergeant, he served his country in the Korean Conflict as a medic. M.J. was a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion.
