She was a resident of Bourg for 40 years, and a native of Houma, La. She was an avid gardener and often known as the “Day Lillie Lady” and loved the outdoors. You could often find her early in the morning dressed in her house coat making her rounds in her “Dilly Dally” garden checking the quality of the latest blooms in her yard. Later she created her own inside garden after the loss of her husband of 66 years. This African Violet collection that she called her “little friend’s” began a new way of life living alone. If you were to visit you were sure to get a lesson in horticulture and maybe given a little Lagniappe, a cutting or maybe a plant or two. Olen was a very generous, loving, and talented person. She had many God given gifts besides gardening. She loved sewing for family and friends. Her sister in law, the late Lucy Picou Porche at the age of 96 could still be heard commenting on how much she had loved the three-piece wool suit Olen had made her when she was in her younger years. During WWII, she knitted many sweaters and sewed many shirts for the war effort. Later in life she created many beautiful quilts. Many her own original applique design which she shared with her family. In 1960, she received her degree in cosmetology and opened her own successful beauty shop for 30 years, “Olen Ann’s Beauty Haven” on Walnut Street in Houma. She graduated with honors in 1944 amongst the first graduating class of Terrebonne High School. Life was good for this very faith-filled woman.
