D, a World War II veteran, retired research chemist for the Southern Regional Research Center and the USDA, and a retired research professor for the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University died on Saturday, July 22, 2017. Dr. Dupuy, 94, was a native of Gheens, LA, and long-time resident of Metairie, LA. He spent his final days at the Suites of Sugar Mill Pointe in Houma, LA. Born on September 10, 1922, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Dupuy, the brother of the late Norman, Roy and Lawrence Dupuy, the uncle of the late Lawrence Dupuy, Jr., and the godfather of the late John Parr. Dr. Dupuy is survived by his sister Gertrude Parr, four nieces and nephews, and numerous great nieces and nephews and their children. Dr. Dupuy is also survived by the wife of his late godson John Parr, Charlotte Parr. Charlotte cared for Dr. Dupuy when his health began to decline several years ago. Dr. Dupuy entrusted Charlotte with his affairs. Dr. Dupuy thanked Charlotte for her selfless time and devotion to his care until his dying day. He appreciated all Charlotte and her family did to make his final years comfortable. Dr. Dupuy graduated from Lockport High School in 1942. Upon graduation, Dr. Dupuy enlisted in the United States Army Air Force. Dr. Dupuy served as a nose gunner with the 15th Air Force in the 464 Bomb group. Dr. Dupuy and crew members completed over 50 missions in their 10-man B-24 Liberator. He was awarded several medals including five Bronze Stars and the Distinguished Flyng Cross. Dr. Dupuy received a G.I. bill for his outstanding service in the military. He started college at the University of Illinois in Chicago in 1946. After two years, he transferred to Louisiana State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in chemistry and biochemistry. His research resulted in several awards including a USDA Superior Service Award for outstanding research in the development of highly effective water-resistant, fire-retardant paints applicable to civilian, industrial and military needs. He received a second USDA Superior Service Award for outstanding research in the development of rapid instrumental techniques for measuring flavor quality in raw and processed food products for Kraft foods. He has over 100 patents and publications. Through is outstanding life accomplishments, Dr. Dupuy was given the honor of meeting four United States Presidents. Dr. Dupuy was a member of the American Chemical Society, American Oil Chemists' Society, Institute of Food Technologists, American Peanut and Education Association, and the National Association of Federal Employees. He was a devout catholic and member of the St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Metairie, LA. A funeral mass will be held in his honor at Saint Anthony Catholic Church in Gheens, LA, on Saturday, July 29, 2017, at 11:00 am. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am. Dr. Harold Dupuy will be brought to his final resting place at Holy Savior Memorial Chapel Mausoleum in Lockport, LA following the funeral mass.
