HISTORY OF NEBO BAPTIST CHURCH Records of establishment of progress of Nebo Baptist Church. In August 18, 1855 there came together the following brethren and sisters who had been received upon a profession of faith and regularly baptised by Elder William J. Lacy, an ordained minister of the gospel and missionary of the Ouachita Baptist Association John Q. Adams Elvira Scothern John W. Pounds Matilda Scothern Willis A J. Odom Nancy Matthews Lucinda Salyers The above named members did that they agree and covenant to be constituted a regular Baptist Church to keep house for the Lord. So, on August 19, 1855 the church held its' first conference in which Brother Willis A.J. Odom was elected clerk. W.J. Lacy suggested the name Mount Nebo for the church: which was agreeably accepted. The was a Sunday School organized son after her constitution of which Moses Walker was Superintendant and Dempsey Odom, assistant Superintendant (later ordained to peach in 1859). The church (located at this time near Claude Rays' house) was disolved April 17, 1881, by letters to other churches. It Lasted a little more than 25 years The re-organization of Mount Nebo Baptist Church took place on August 22, 1891, after a sermon by Elder J. M. Brooks, by the following members: T.W. Yule Nathan Scothern Bertha Yule James A. Graham A. F. Ferrill Sister W. Pounds M. E. Ferrill Sister Sally Young Levi Netherland Nancy Netherland Brother J. S. Ray preached his first sermon at Nebo Sept. 6, 1901. He served till Oct. 11, 1903. J. N. Wills followed him as pastor. T. W. yule served as Clerk from June 7, 1896 until feb. 3, 1966 followed by J. A. Wilson. In 1920 I. O. Swazey came to Nebo and served as Sunday School Superintendant, serving the Lord and his church faithfully until his death Jan. 3, 1950. Brother T. J. Ratcliff was elected pastor of Nebo in Sept. 27, 1925 and served for 2 years. August 31, 1930, Brother R. M. Doughty preached first sermon in the new church building at the present site, across from Nebo School. He resigned May 12, 1935. Brother R. L. Bridges served as pastor from Sept. 1, 1936 until Aug. 1, 1937. August 26, 1937, Brother C. G. Wilson was elected pastor and served until Nov. 17, 1938. Brother O. G. Cannon served for a shor time beginning Nov. 1938. Brother R. M. Doughty was re-elected pastor Feb. 9, 1939 and resigned due to ill health Aug. 1944. Sept. 13, 1944 Brother D. E. Byrd was elected pastor at a salary of $150.00 per month and at this time the church voted to go full time. They also voted to build church parsonage Oct. 11, 1944. Brother Byrd resigned Jan. 7, 1945 Brother H. H. Foster was elected pastor Feb. 28, 1945 and served until April 30, 1948. Educational building was built June 29, 1947 when completed a new auditorium was built. May 4, 1948, Brother T. J. Ratcliff was re-elected pastor and served until his retirement in dec. 1, 1952. Feb. 1, 1953, Brother E. F. Wall was elected pastor. Under his leadership the first homecoming was started July 8, 1953. He resigned Nov. 1, 1955. Vernon Chevallier was elected Jan. 18, 1956 and served until April, 12, 1959. Brother R. C. Branch became pastor Oct. 1, 1959 and served until April 28, 1963. Brother Russell Neal served as pastor from Aug. 4, 1963 until August 31, 1969. Under his leadership were put in new pews in the church, paneled hard wood flooring in the auditorium and central heating and air conditioning. New Parsonage was built for 15,000 in Nov. 1967: paid for by May 1971. Brother Alton _?_?_?_?_ served as pastor from April 19, 1970 until Oct. 10, 1971. Brother J. D. Favors was elected Nov. 14, 1971. In 1972-73 we bricked the church, new windows, light fixtures for auditorium, put in central heating and air conditioning in the educational building.
