Collins 14 day of December 1857 State of Louisiana Parish of Catahoula Be it Known by these presents that before me R.G. Wooton, Jr., a Notary Public in and for the said Parish & State and the subscribing witnesses personally came & appeared Eli Splawn resident of the above Parish & State who declares that for the Consideration herein after expressed, he has this day sold and by these present does Sell transfer and deliver unto Reuben W. Collins of the Parish & State aforesaid, who is personally present and accepting for himself, all of his right title & interest in and to a Negro woman named Eliza, Twenty Seven years old, for Fourteen Hundred & Seventy one Dollars which said Negro woman the said Eli Splawn doth sell transfer to the said Reuben W. Collins to have and to hold forever for his only proper use and benefit his heirs or assigns the title to which Negro woman the vendor doth warrant and will forever defend to be free from the lawful claims of all persons whomsoever and warrants her free from the visces & maladies proscribed by law and Slave for life. This sale is made for the following consideration, Eleven Hundred dollars cash paid the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged and the said Reuben W. Collins gives his promissory note for Three Hundred & Seventy one Dollars payable to the order of Eli Splawn bearing even date with this act stipulating eight percent per annum interest until paid and payable the first day of January A.D. Eighteen Hundred & fifty-nine which note is paraphed Ne Varieties by me said Notary to identify it with this act and in order to secure the faithful & final payment of said note and all accumulating interest thereon the said R.W. Collins doth mortgage & specially hypothicate in favor of the said Eli Splawn the slave woman Eliza herein described & sold to remain so mortgaged & hypothicated until the final payment of said note & he obligates himself not to alienate or incumber this property to the prejudice of this mortgage and the parties hereby agree to wave the production of a mortgage certificate as is required by article 328 of the Civil Code of Louisiana. This don signed & passed this the 14 day of December A.D. Eighteen hundred & fifty-seven in the presence of the subscribing witnesses & me the said notary.
