SPLAWN,M.D. to all Diseases connected with the EYE and EAR PHYSICIAN and SURGEON _____:oo:_____ All calls promptly attended DAY or NIGHT Elmo, Texas Feby 16th 1877 Dr. J. Ezell Dear Doctor I have your letter in possession for some time but owing to my negligence I have been slow about answering. I am glad you are getting a fine practice and hope you will make good Collections. I am only Collecting about enough to pay expenses and to keep even with the world. As to Martha coming out here in the Spring and Summer, I would like to see her and Children but owing to the inconvenience of getting a house and having House affairs to take care of them selfs I think it best for her to stay at home. Pa speaks of going back to Louisiana in the Summer. He is going to quit the business he is in now. If he does we'll leave here, and go back to Catahoula and spend the summer with you. I see no need of you coming out here this summer with all your children. Nothing to be gained by the visit but a heap of loss and trouble connected with the move. Anthony is in Clarksville in business and doing very well. I have not seen him for about 6 months. Martin is here - rented my portion of the mill. He is in fine health and making some money. Please see Tom Francis and get him to pay that note. Van Bradford owes me four dollars (4$). Please tell him to send it to me or pay it to you. We are all in good health - doing very well - Old Hester & Geroge are still here, they are making money. George has 200$ out at Inst. Nothing more - let us hear from you occasionaly and oblige Your Friend I.L. Splawn (Original letter among the Ezell Family Papers & Photographs. Letter transcribed by Patricia E. Ezell, 1991)
