Ransdell, through a fortunate interview with General Fred Ainsworth, chief of the records and pension office in the war department, is enabled to render one of his constituents, a destitute widow, a very important service. Mrs. Susan E. Corley, of Catahoula parish, the widow of Harrison Corley, late of Company A First Louisiana Cavalry, applied for a pension twenty seven years ago. On investigation it was found that the records charged her husband with desertion, which fact barred her case from receiving further consideration. Recently she wrote to Mr. Ransdell a very pitiful letter, explaining that she was old and infirm, and was in destitute circumstances. On visiting the war department Mr. Ransdell consulted General Ainsworth, who had the soldier’s record examined. The representative was able to supply some important information to the effect that the soldier, instead of being a deserter, was confined in the hospital when his company was mustered out. Mr. Ransdell has received notice from the war department that the charge of desertion has been removed. The widow’s case will now receive attention at the hands of the commissioner of pensions, and in due time she will receive a handsome sum as back pension. – Ruston Daily Leader. Additional Comments: Harrison L. Corley served in the 1st LA Battalion, Company A Cavalry Scouts in the Union Army. His widow is listed on the 1890 Veterans Schedule in Catahoula Parish.
