FROM THE FILES REFLECTIONS OF THE PAST 50 Years Ago - April 27, 1950 Mr. Carlyle Tillery, author of the novel, "Redbone Woman," visited his aunt, Mrs. H..D. Roberts and other relatives here Sunday. Tillery, whose home is in Tuscaloosa, Ala., was formerly from Jena, having spent the early part of his childhood here. "Redbone Woman," whose setting is Southeast La., required for years of work. Mrs. H.S. Jacks, wife of the late principal of Jena High School, has accepted the post of acting principal of Jena High School and will finish out the current school term in the office left vacant by the sudden death of her husband who succumbed to a heart attack last Friday. Four bright, shiny new trash cans, purchased recently by the town council, have been placed on the streets of Jena and if they prove successful will be followed by others. It is hoped that the cans will serve as constant reminders against throwing paper and other refuse on the sidewalks and streets and thereby make for a cleaner and more beautiful town. Movies at The Strand Theater: "Blood on the Moon," "Horseman of the Sierras," "Pinky," "The Counterpunch," "Oh, You Beautiful Doll," "Grand Canyon. 40 Years Ago- April 28, 1960 Army Specialist Four Phinn S. Kennon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Kennon, was a member of the 1st Armored Division's Combat Command. A team which competed in the recent post basketball tournament at Ft. Hood, Texas. The Tullos Amoco Caf will have a gala opening celebration Saturday as J.D. and Oddie Elliott take over management. Free coffee and donuts will be served throughout the day. Shirley Lavespere, senior at Jena High School, has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship to the Northwestern State College School of Nursing. Shirley is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Lavespere. Quick notification of the fire department was credited by Robert Butler as the reason volunteer firemen were able to stop a fire in the rear of Greer's Laundry Monday night before damage became too extensive. The fire which began in an electrical shop in the rear of the laundry, was noticed by a neighbor, Mrs. Pete Doughty. 25 Years Ago - April 24, 1975 Jena High School Future Farmers of America chapter members who placed in the recent state literary rally include Brian Doughty, Superior in Boy's Vocal Solo; Bruce Burnhum, second in Agriculture II; and Dan Evans, fifth in Agriculture V. The LaSalle Hospital Candy Stripers held a dinner at Plantation Manor in Alexandria April 17th to honor their graduating seniors. They were Sharon Andrews, Regina Foley, Kim Francis, Gayle Walker, and Linda Sleeth. A birthday party was given for Irene Simmons on her 3rd birthday April 14th at her home. Those attending were Barbara, Dawn and Walter Simmons, Raymond, Juanita, Sleda, Ramonia, Wade, Kimberly, and Joey Escalon, her parents, and sister, Shannon. Dana Parker, 5, was crowned Miss La Petite of Caldwell Parish Saturday. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dixie Finley of Olla. Mr. and Mrs. Lige Clark of Rhinehart celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, April 20. Many lovely gifts were presented to them and cake and punch were served to numerous guests. 10 Years Ago - April 25, 1990 Gotta-Go Grocery and Video Store, located next to Jena Airport on La. Hwy 8 about two miles from Jena, suffered heavy losses during a fire which started in the kitchen of the store last Tuesday afternoon. The fire started in a deep fat fryer and spread to most of the rear of the building before Jena firemen could bring the blaze under control. Owners of the store have announced they will rebuilt as quickly as possible. Brooke Deville, of Jena, was crowned "Little miss Dogwood Festival" during the Miss Dogwood Festival beauty pageant held in Pollock on March 31st. The Jena High School Lady Giant Track Team tied Caldwell High last Thursday for the District Championship title. Members of the squad were: Chasity Brown, Lamona Brown, Phoebe Walpole, Joletta Rise, Daneen Paul, Cheryl Dorsey, Jessica Ivey, Tomiko Brown, and Kofine Smith. Justin Windham and Traci Paul were presented the "Honesty and Integrity" Awards by Carrieta Lodge #312 of Trout during a recent ceremony.
