From The Files… REFLECTIONS OF THE PAST 60 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK - May 13, 1937: Louisiana received $77,805,247.38 during the period April 8, 1935 to March 31, 1937, according to a report received by Edward J. Gay, State Director for the National Emergency Council. A large group of East Jena club members met with Mrs. Tomlinson at the Jena High School Cafeteria on Tuesday, May 4, where an interesting demonstration on jelly making, using the alcohol test, was given by Miss Westbrook. Delicious refreshments of strawberries, whipped cream tea and cake were served to Mesdames J.W. Allen, R.E. Ford, W.W. Russell, B.L. Henderson, W.L. Barrett, H.W. Holmes, James Bradford, T.M. Swazey, N.E. Jackson, L.W. Holmes, Myrtle Tomlinson, E. Long, Lorena Poole, Julia Thompson, S.E. Humphries, Jack Hutchins, W.O. Greer, Minnie Lou Manchester, Alpha Duke, Tom Wainwright, S.L. Richardson, C.B. Bodie, B.P. Miles, Newt Ezell, M. Tarver and Misses Lillian Fluitt, Berti Duke, Pauline Miles and Keitha Cowart. LaSalle Parish farmers who are participating in the Agricultural Conservation Program are urged by J.V. Hinton, county agent, to plant summer legumes such as soybeans, cow peas or velvet beans as early as possible in order to qualify for full AAA payments and to have an adequate seed supply for 1938. Several stars who have become favorites of the movie fans of this section will be starring in pictures which have historical, entertainment and romantic interest at the new Princess Theatre in Tullos next week. Sunday and Monday, Carole Lombard and Fred MacMurray are together again in "Swing High, Swing Low." On Tuesday and Wednesday, New Princess will feature one of the greatest historical dramas the screen has yet produced when it brings to the screen "Lloyds of London", a story of a momentous period in the history of England. The film features Freddie Bartholomew, Tyrone Power, Madeleine Carroll, Douglas Scott and Sir Guy Standing. Rev. and Mrs. B.T. Goodwin went to New Orleans Wednesday of this week to attend the 87th anniversary convention of the Southern Baptist Convention. The people of Jena will be pleased to learn that the play "Trifles" put on by pupils of Jena High School, and directed by Mrs. Ned H. Sandlin, won third place in the State Rally in Baton Rouge. The cast of the play were Carajean White, Merle Owens, Holmes Breithaupt, Early Doughty and Q.R. One mile from Jena High School." 50 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK- May 15, 1947: When fireworks died down last Tuesday, at the end of politicking and voting, for and against free ranging of cattle inside the corporate limits of Jena, it was found the forces arrayed against banning cows from the streets had won by a majority of 56 votes. In a promulgation of the returns Wednesday night, the Town Council found the following figures to be correct and official: Against, 246 and For, 184. Estimates of the number of voters eligible to vote in the election varied from 450 to 500. More than $2,000,000 in road projects will be bid on May 28 in the largest single letting of road contracts in 10 years, Highway Director P.A. Frye announced today. The Jena Oilers slugged their way to a 10-3 victory over Columbia's Ramblers in a game Wednesday night in the Ramblers' home park at Columbia in a game that saw some of the heaviest hitting by the local boys this season. A change in the schedule at Hot Wells has been announced by the officials of the junior Chamber of Commerce of Rapides Parish. Hot Wells, 18 miles from Alexandria was redeveloped by the junior chamber and opened exactly one year ago. Approximately 20,000 people, coming from every state in the nation and at last two foreign countries, have patronized this spa. A mad cow was destroyed by Mr. Alex Floyd, owner of the cow, at Trout Tuesday after the animal had attacked several people. The cow's peculiar actions were first noticed Monday morning when Mr. Melvin, father of the Trout Postmaster, attempted to drive her from a garden where she was pawing and bellowing. She drove Mr. Melvin into a small outhouse and stood guard until neighbors chased her away. Later, the madden animal attacked a Perkins boy, knocking him to the ground. Monday night, Mr. Coates, night watchman for La. Delta Lbr. Co. was attached by the same cow as he clocked in on his rounds. He managed to beat her off with a heavy club. When complaints were received by the sheriff's department the owner was notified and promptly destroyed her. Although no tests were reported, it was supposed the cow suffered from rabies. Belah: "Mrs. Bertha Ganey spent several days the past week with her daughter, Mrs. Derwood Williams, Mr. Williams and family. Elizabeth Stringer spent Tuesday night with her cousin, Tressie Jean Williams. Miss Lorraine Ganey, of Pineville, was the weeknd guest in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. I.E. Ganey. There was a working here ast the cemetery Saturday, consisting of cleaning off the graves and enlarging the cemetery. Gerald L. Stringer left Monday to accept a position in the Montgomery Ward store in Monroe. Summerville: "Miss Lonnie Andrews is visiting her sister, Mrs. Jim Allbritton at Rosefield a few weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Reeves visited during the week with Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Parker of Belah. Mr. and Mrs. Davis Roark and daughters of Shreveport, visited Saturday night and stayed with relatives here. Mrs. Ellis Roark and son visited Sunday night with Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Taylor of Searcy. Mrs. Mary Flowers was the dinner guest of Mrs. Mavis Cockerham Sunday at Searcy. Mr. George Hutson visited Mr. Dock Vickers Sunday afternoon. Jena, La. 25 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK- MAY 18, 1972: Dwayne Roark, basketball coach at Jena High School, was hired by the Jena Town Council at their meeting last Tuesday night as Recreational Director for the town's summer recreation program. Tanya Ganey and Marcia Williams were hired as lifeguards for the Jena swimming pool this summer. Marshal Cliff Barton of Olla has announced that after publication of this public notice, that speed limit and muffler laws will be strictly enforced in the town of Olla. Dedication services for the new Searcy Baptist Church will be held at 2 p.m. this Sunday according to the pastor, Rev. E.W. Zimmerebner. The service will include an old-fashioned dinner on the ground and all former pastors and members are being invited. The Farmer's Home Administration has approved a $280,000 loan and $40,000 grant to the Whitehall Water System, Inc., of LaSalle Parish. Employees of Georgia-Pacific plants located at Urania in LaSalle Parish, rejected a union organization for a second time in less than two years, by more than a 2 to 10 vote last week. Elections were held Thursday and Friday for the employees of Georgia-Pacific's plywood, particleboard and creosote plants at Urania. The Olla Town Council has adopted a resolution to officially change the garbage pickup schedules and residence requirements for a trial period of three months. Residents of Olla will be required to use plastic bags and place them at a property pickup point on designated days, or otherwise be responsible for disposal of their own garbage. Special guest for Jena's Howdy Neighbor Day Celebration on Saturday, May 27, Miss Louisiana 1971. She will draw the winning ticket for the boat-motor- trailer to be given away by the Jena Jaycees on Howdy Neighbor Day. Urania voters who expect to be out of town on election day, June 3, can vote absentee ballot anytime between now and Saturday, May 27. Graduations exercises for Jena High School seniors will be held Friday evening, May 19, at 8 p.m. at the Guy Campbell Memorial Athletic Complex. George Mears will give the invocation, followed by the salutatory and valedictory addresses given by Larry Decker and Gary Tradewell, respectively. Doyle Brooks will serve as master of ceremonies. Howdy Neighbor Day barbecue specialist E.J. "Frenchie" Hebert, and his two assistants, Truman Webb and Charles Cupples proudly display the personally autographed football presented to Hebert by the Kansas City Chiefs. The presentation was made at a barbecue held at the home of Lamar Hunt given for the Chiefs. R. and P.C. Ambiavagar, will lead the 1987 graduation class of LaSalle High School as class valedictorian during graduation exercises Friday, May 15. Other class leaders are Steven Eubanks, salutatorian and Vert Oliver Lee, historian. Nori Newburg, daughter of Carl and Nikki Newburg and Chris Peters, son of Jimmie and Melanie Peters, will lead their graduation class as valedictorians during exercises Thursday night. Paige McCartney was named salutatorian. Dewey Taylor, 83, a prominent Jena merchant for many years, died last Friday, on May 8, 1987, at LaSalle General Hospital. While fire losses for the state were up during 1986, the losses reported in Jena by the fire department took a nose dive during the past year. The LaSalle General Hospital Board of Directors, met for about two hours in special session Monday night to interview applicants for LaSalle General administrator. The three applicants, Bill Nunnally, Mary Denton and Cedric Chapman were recommended for the board's interview by a special Hospital Administrative service committee. Jeff Thompson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray G. Thompson, and a 1983 graduate of Jena High School, was elected President of the Student Government Association at Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe on May 4. As of today, the stories are coming in faster, for the LaSalle History Book that is to be published soon, with the hopeful delivery date of December, 1987.
