From The Files… REFLECTIONS OF THE PAST 50 YEARS AGO-APRIL 6, 1950 Mrs. L.R. Daniel was hostess to a beautifully planned luncheon and canasta part at her home on Monday, April 3. A hand crocheted cloth overlaid the table and spring flowers were attractively used, lending a charming spring atmosphere to the living dining rooms. Mrs. Daniels' guests were Mrs. C.O. Williams, Mrs. J. Pipes, Mrs. T.E. Watts, and Mrs. Imogene Maddox. The prize won by Mrs. C.O. Williams was a lovely embroidered handkerchief. Bubba Hawthorne was feted with a birthday party on March 13, at 3:30 p.m. in the home of his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Herbert Hawthorne. Those present were Richard Tullos, Ronnie Tullos, Don Tarver, Bill Flowers, Richard Doughty, Francis Doughty, Donna Steen, Stevie Campbell, Sallie Campbell, Glendna Kay Lees, Non Farley, James Philip Gaharan, George Hardner Gaharan, Nancy Ann Floyd, Charles McCartney, Keeth McCartney, Gary Wayne McCartney, Rand Greer, Rebecca Montgomery, Bryant Jr. McCarroll, Peggy Hawthorne, Butchie Baldridge, Eddie Wright, Verna Spence, Bo Bo Richardson, Johnette Richardson, Mr. & Mrs W.G. Admission - 12 cents and 25 cents. 40 YEARS AGO- April 7, 1960 Two trucks, one carrying ice cream and the other carrying 5,000 fryers side swiped one another on the Alexandria cut-off (State Route 772) about 3 miles southwest of Jena Friday morning about 7 a.m. Several hundred of the chickens were killed but over 4,000 are turned loose by an insurance adjuster, who reportedly yelled, "anybody who can catch them, can have them." For the rest of the day, an unending stream of cars arrived with the occupants immediately jumping out and racing through the woods in hot pursuit of hundreds of "southern frieds." Mrs. Donald Maxwell honored her son, Scott, with a party in her home from 3-5 on the occasion of his 3rd birthday. Following the opening of many gifts, refreshments of birthday cake, ice cream and coke were served to: Beth Martin, Karen and Ken Stevens, Charlene Boyd, Larry and Bobby Lunn Maxwell, Phil Long, Carol Holt, Joey Hodge, Dianne Peppers, Sarah Beth Bass, and Roy Lee. Millard Neal of Jena celebrated his 77th birthday April 3 and that evening several friends dropped into offer good wishes and give presents. Refreshments of cake, coffee, ice cream, and Kool-Aid were served to Mr. & Mrs. G.O. Peyton, Mr. & Mrs. Woodrow Smith and children, Mrs. Lillie Boyd, Mr. Lank Neal, Mrs. Nola Poole, Mrs. Rosalie Enterkin, Mrs. Opal Gravelle and children, and the Rev. and Mrs. W.F. Ainsworth. 25 YEARS AGO - APRIL 3, 1975 These three former Jena players helpd Whitworth college of Brookhaven, Miss., post a 17-13 record under first year coach, Dwain Roark. They were Talmadge "Wolf" Jenkins, Cornell Walker and Billy Charbono. The Jena Giants stopped Winnfield Monday afternoon as Darrell McCartney nurled a 1-hitter and struck out 16 batters. This was McCartney's first service on the mount his season. Deborah Darlene Burroughs, 4 year old, took 2nd place in Tiny Tot Easter Pageant in Leesville, Sunday, March 23rd. Local girls wins title of Little Miss Easter in Terrebone Parish. Valissa Renee Hall has been asked to reign in all further pageants in Terrebone Parish and will also ride in the Mardi Gars parades with other reigning Queens. The Jena Special Interest March meeting was in the home of Mrs. Nettie Cobbs. Needlework in pillows and quilts was the demonstration of the day. Shown with some of the needleworks are Mrs. H.S. Owens, Mrs. Myrna Tiller, Miss Rae Roark, Mrs. Malcolm Aldredige, Mrs. Nettie Cobb, Mrs. Ruby Howard, Mrs. Walter Brewton, and Mrs. Clyde Russell. 10 YEARS AGO - APRIL 4, 1990 Jena High School students who recently participated in the district literary rally at La. College and qualified for the state competition to be held in Baton Rouge April 21 include Sara Crooks, Allyson Cooper, Jessica Paul, Candy Stewart, Nadrid Jackson, Chasity Brown, Jennifer Francis, Stephanie Tarver, beck Baker, Eric Creel, Steve Kendrick, Clay Mayo, Dwayne Jones, and Jonathan Johnson. Math Count participants from JJHS at the recent regional competition were Will Bridges, Darin Many, Jason Adams, and Billy Hall. They were coached by Ms. Bridget Thomsen and Mr. Clyde Crooks. On March 20, 1990, the Jena Garden and Civic Club met in the home of Fae Roark. Plans for the trip to Hodges Gardens in April were made. We plan to go the first week of April as we hear the flowers are beautiful at this time. Members present were: Jeanette Bean, Una Carroll, Nettie Cobbs, Myrtle Holmes, Audi Moore, Mary Nicholson, Reba Vincent, Ineta Wangness, and Mae Whatley. Ruth Wagnon and Gilbert Sison were two of the LaSalle High School's students who placed in the State Competition held in Baton Rouge last month. Ruth competed in the area of Computer Concepts and placed third and Gilbert competed in the area of Economics and placed 2nd in the state
