From The Files… REFLECTIONS OF THE PAST 60 YEARS AGO - June 2, 1937 About to complete his first year as sheriff of LaSalle Parish, Barlow Thompson this week addressed a letter to the citizens of the parish. He wrote, "I wish to express to the people of LaSalle Parish my appreciation for your splendid cooperation. There have been several infractions of the law during the past 12 months, but all were of minor importance. My deputies and I have been very diligent in trying to break up the sale and manufacture of liquor in the parish and we are proud of our batting average along this line: Eight arrests and eight convictions." The Antioch Home Demonstration Club met last week with Mrs. Wade Andrews. Miss Westbrook demonstrated a very interesting lesson by making plum jelly. The hostess served sandwiches and chocolate to Miss Cora Westbrook, Mrs. Bill Andrews, Mrs. Armen Reeves, Mrs. Pilcher, Mrs. Human, Mrs. J.C. Hinckley, Mrs. Willie Smith, Mrs. J. W. Carter and Mrs. Elsie Ainsworth. H. Street Hudspeth Jr., Jena boy who has been a student at Jefferson Military Academy at Washington, Mississippi, has returned home after a very successful year of studies. Street was manager of the Jefferson "Tigers" baseball team and played alto horn in the band which made several trips through Mississippi. According to P. Willis, secretary of the LaSalle Parish Farm Bureau, contracts have been signed for ten car loads of potatoes from LaSalle parish at a price of $1.10 per hundred pounds. This price is considerably lower than was received last year, but Mr. Willis points out that in Iowa and other potato growing states there was a shortage of the product, causing southern farms to reap a harvest. The news bureau of Louisiana State University listed the following graduates from LaSalle: bachelors of Science, College of Agriculture - Kirk T. Warner; Marshal Robertson Smith; Mary Kathlyn Jones, Masters of Science in Physical Education-William Clyde Stallcup. Masters of Arts-Jackson B. Davis, Bachelor of Medicine-Guy Campbell. The Camp Swan Orchestra will broadcast a 30 minute program from Station KALB at Alexandria next Saturday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. Howard Hooter will play a trumpet solo and George Hughes, the pianist, will play and sing some new hit songs. Final approval 241 applications made by 286 LaSalle Parish farmers for payment totally $7,207.22 under the 1936 Agricultural Conservation Program had been given by the state auditing office and the General Accounting Office in Baton Rouge announced J.W. Bateman, director of the Louisiana State University Agricultural Extension Division this week. Members of the Noms Schrader Post No. 198 of the American Legion at Tullos will on Friday night of this week present the "Sunshine Boys' Bob and Joe" who are heard over Radio Stateion KWKH. The entertainment will be given in the Tullos Junior High School auditorium and the proceeds will be donated to the Tullos troop of the Boy Scouts of America, which is sponsored by the Legion Post. Newburg's Farm Supply Co., Jena, Louisiana. 50 YEARS AGO - June 5, 1947 "We've got to do something about the horses and hogs," said Mayor Clyde Russell today discussing the heavy damage being done to fences and shrubbery inside Jena city limits by these animals. The number of complaints reaching the Mayor's office indicates that damage to property is becoming quite extensive and property owners are demanding relief from this nuisance. Briefs from the School Board Office: Work has begun on the site of the new high school building for Jena. The contractor plans to complete the building by January 1948. The men teachers, janitors, school board members and a few invited guests went fish last Tuesday and enjoyed a fish fry on the banks of Snaggy Lake in Catahoula Parish. The people of American spent more on cosmetics last year than they did on their schools. The complete new and modern telephone system for Jena and vicinity is expected to be put in use by June 15. A large and experienced crew of men are rapidly installing the new type phones and connecting them to the large switchboard. The Goodpine exchange will be discontinued, therefore all calls will be made through the Jena office, which will mean faster and more efficient service for the residents of Trout-Goodpine as well as Jena subscribers. A few simple rules, listed below will help both the subscribers and operator in giving better service in the new phones. (1) Do not place the telephone back on receiver while calling someone to the phone as this will disconnect your line. (2) The new switchboard will automatically ring your party until call is answered or you hang up, there it is not necessary to ask operator to ring again. (3)To get operator again after finishing a call press switch bar on the set two or three times, this will cause a light on her board to flash. (4) Always call by number when possible, this greatly helps the operator to give faster and better service. The new phone sets are the best and most modern that are available, so please treat it the same as you would other fine household office furniture. The Jena Chamber of Commerce has entered an application with the post office department toward establishing a Star Route between Jena and Olla. Farmers, gardeners, or just hobby vegetables growers are invited to bring their vegetables to sell at the market. The United Jaycees of LaSalle Parish, with members from Tullos, Olla, Urania and Georgetown, installed officers at a banquet held at Tullos Elementary School last Tuesday night. Officers installed were Michael White, president; James Morrison, internal vice president; Arthur Dolught, external vice president; Cliff Harty, secretary; Charles McCartney, treasurer; Jack Womack, parliamentarian; Joe Fussell, state director; and directors, Howell Brown, James Carroll and Joe Fussell. Edwin R. Hughes, Jena, attorney, announced today his intention to qualify as a candidate for judge of the 28th Judicial District Court for LaSalle and Caldwell Parishes.
