From The Files… REFLECTIONS OF THE PAST 60 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK - July 8, 1937 Dr. E.L. Miller, director of the LaSalle Parish Health Unit on Tuesday issued a statement in which he warned against children using the swimming hole on Hemp's Creek in North Jena. "the water in this swimming hole is so contaminated that we find it against every precaution of public health safeguard," Dr. Miller said. "There are sufficient running creeks near Jena to provide swimming facilities without having to use the hold near J.B. Peyton's home on Hemp's Creek. Effective July 1, all Social Security account numbers will be issued to workers from field offices of the Social Security Board. A large group of women met in the home of Miss Lillian Fluitt, Friday, July 2, for an all-day seing class. Each member brought a picnic lunch and her sewing or something to work on during the day. John Henry Smith, former pastor of the First Baptist Church in Jena, but now pastor at Gibsland the principal address on Friday, July 23. Due to the fact that Monday, July 5, was considered a legal holiday, the LaSalle Parish Police Jury and School Board did not hold their regular scheduled quarterly meeting this week. The delay in the School Board meeting is occasioned by the fact that the members want to await official advice from the state school department as to how much money will be available to LaSalle for the next school term. The figures are necessary before any budget can made up, Superintendent J.D. Russell stated Monday. Merchants and businessmen of Jena will close up and go to church for one hour each day beginning on next Monday, July 12, and ending on Friday, July 17. A petition was circulated among the business houses Tuesday in order for the employees of the concerns could be allowed to attend the revival meeting that will be in progress at the First Baptist church next week and the following signed: W.C. Johnson, Choctaw Okla., club woman, has devised a method of canning milk to use on the farm when pasture grasses are dead and "Bossy" goes dry. By thoroughly cooling whole sweet milk, putting it in jars and processing it at 15 pounds pressure for 45 minutes, she obtains canned milk that can be used for cooking. Although the milk turns pink when processed, Mrs. Johnson says the color in no way affects the value of the product. 50 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK-THURSDAY, JULY 10, 1947 The "scariest" fish story to come to the attention of the editor this season concerns Marvin Richmond who has been here several days on vacation. According to the story, verified by Marvin's sister, Mrs. Tom Wilson, he was standing chest deep in back-water, fishing in Willow Lake near Old River. A 4 foot moccasin suddenly appeared nearby making straight for Marvin. In the ensuing fighting and splashing, the snake managed to get inside Marvin's shirt which was open in front, and wound himself completely around Marvin. Friends said Marvin sank down into the water to keep from being bitten and the snake finally wriggled out. Others advance the theory that Marvin fainted and the snake just left anyway. Marvin said he didn't remember just how the snake got out but he's still scared. The following day, W.S. Ezell took his electrical treasure hunting device and located Marvin's watch in five feet of water where he had lost it in his fight with the moccasin. A malaria control program will get underway in Jena and vicinity tomorrow, July 11, according to Tom Green Bradford, health inspector here. The program under direction of local health authorities, will be continuous from now until cool weather. DDT spray and powder will be used and oil will also be sprayed. Stagnated pools, drainage ditches and week patches and outdoor toilets will be treated regularly. Marshall Elliott Jr., drivers license examiner for this area, will be in Jena at the courthouse Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays of each week and in Olla, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Examiner Elliott warned that when applicants come to the courthouse for license, a regularly licensed driver must bring their automobile. Miller announced this week that they were successful in passing a concurrent resolution which instructs the State Department of Highways to reconstruct Louisiana Highway 127 between Jena and Olla. The lawmakers agreed this is one of the top priority projects throughout the area and they hope to make every effort to obtain the funds within the next year. The newly organized LaSalle Soil and Water Conservation District's supervisors held their first meeting last Thursday in the LaSalle Parish courthouse. The Board elected Murphey Tannehill, chairman; Morgan Baker vice chairman and Charles Williams, secretary-treasurer. The other two members of the board are L.W. Peppers and Phillip Bradford. The Ward Two All-Stars will be playing in the Bi-district tournament held at Rebel Field in Olla, beginning July 15-July 27. Those on the All-Star team are Wayland Bass, Danny Comeaux, Brad Jones, Keith Ruddell, Kent Ruddell, Jess Girod, Jody Mack, Terry Ranton, Robbin Pilcher, Randy Stott, Randy Smith, Jeff Foster, Michael Ranton, Scott Poole, Scott Long and Kevin McDougald. Candidates for election as delegates to the Louisiana Constitutional Convention must file with the Secretary of State's office no later than next Wednesday, July 19, and will run in the primary election of August 19 to be held under the state's general election law. The LaSalle School Board swept through an house and a half agenda Thursday night with only minor disagreements. Problems arose with the hiring of a girls basketball ccoach for Jena High School. Cathy Odom and Carrice Russell of Winnsboro were nominated, but neither candidate was elected for fact of support by the board. With less than two months before school starts the position still remains open. Sen. Jim Brown announced this week that the supplemental appropriations bill passed by the senate this past week carried an additional appropriation of $250,000 to combat pine beetle infestation throughout Northeast Louisiana. The funds are earmarked before the Louisiana Forestry Commission. Cash Sales of Series E and H Savings Bond in LaSalle Parish during May amounted to $5,968 parish chairman, Ralph Stephenson, reported today. This brings the total thus far this year to $43,521, or 27 percent of the parishes goal of $160,000. The Louisiana Homestead Exemption program is threatened by Federal court panel's decision that has declared unconstitutional the state's present method of reimbursing local governments the property taxes exempted on homes. LaSalle Parish will lose $153,308.50 ($46.67 per exemption) unless the state legislature finds another source of funds or another distribution formula that is constitutionally acceptable. The state is considering lending the money this fall. Clerk of Court Joseph D. Nugent administered the oath of office to Sheriff Alonzo Taylor of LaSalle Parish. Sheriff Taylor began his second term as LaSalle sheriff on July 1. He was re-elected to the office at last fall's primary election. Congressman Otto E. Passman has announced that he is a candidate for re- election to Congress in the August 19 Democratic Primary. *Advertisement: Why Buy a Second Rate Gasoline?
