From The Files… REFLECTIONS OF THE PAST 60 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK- THURSDAY, JULY 15, 1937 Drive through most any section of Louisiana just before dark during the summer and you will see evidence of war that the farmers and the housewife are making on the mosquitoes and the house flies. Around the barn or near the house you will see smudge fires, fires that have wet straw or some wet materials placed on them to produce a lot of smoke. This smudge fire is to keep the mosquitoes away since they cannot withstand the smoke. "What the Health Unit is Doing" (By the Director) Advice to parents: DO NOT TAKE YOUR CHILDREN TO SEE SICK CHILDREN. Infantile spinal paralysis is spreading rapidly in Mississippi, and is now in Louisiana where it is increasing at an alarming rate. If you wish your child to visit a sick child, first learn from the physician if it is safe to do. Even then there is very rarely any good reason for taking your child to visit a sick one. The eighth annual session of the Olla Encampment was held June 29-July 8th. In every way it was the greatest encampment ever held here. Registration reached 100 more than any previous encampment. Besides the 310 who registered, there were crowds from the surrounding communities who attended the evening services. The following officers were elected for the next year: Rev. L.T. Hastings, Monroe, President; Rev. B.C. Land, Winnfield, Vice-President; Rev. E.M. Daffin, Olla, Secretary; Mrs. E.M. Daffin, Olla, Historian and Mr. B.E. Zeagler, Olla, Treasurer. Gasoline and oil purchased by out of state motorists will be checked at the 44,324 filling stations in Louisiana during the week July 18-24 inclusive to find out how much of the gasoline tax bill is paid by Louisiana auto owners as compared to visiting drivers. The information is needed to provide a basis for a long time program of highway improvement in Louisiana. The people of this and adjoining parishes were greatly shocked last Saturday afternoon by the sudden death of Lee Dayton. Apparently in good health, he had gone to Whitehall in connection with his business, when death came most suddenly. His life could almost be summed up in the words integrity and generosity. When one of his fellowman was in need, he never said no an appeal for aid. His friends were those who knew him. 50 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK-THURSDAY, JULY 17, 1947 Although returns from election precincts in School District No. 25 could not be considered official, a preliminary survey this week indicates that the four-mill tax proposition to make available funds for a gymnasium and cafeteria for Jena High School, received little opposition. Jena taxpayers tallied u a good representative vote polling 98 votes, representing $205,450.50 valuation in favor of the proposition and none against. Only one vote was cast against the tax at Goodpine and slight opposition in other quarters. If applications made recently by Superintendent F. H. Shiel, for certain war surplus buildings are granted, both Jena Grammar School and Nebo School will be supplied with cafeterias. A large amount of equipment for these cafeterias has already been acquired by Supt. Shiel, at an immense saving to the school funds and other items have been applied for. Most all of the equipment is war surplus supplies and of high quality.
