From the Files… REFLECTIONS OF THE PAST 50 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK - May 11, 1950 Mr. Dargan Brooks, principal at Trout-Good Pine Elementary School for the past several years, has been named principal of Jena High School for the 1950-51 school term, succeeding the late Mr. H.S. Jacks and Mrs. Jacks who is acting principal for the remainder of the current school term. Miss Nellie Irene "Jo" Clark, of Blade, will complete her studies and receive a B.S. degree in Mathematics June 2, at Northwestern State College at Natchitoches. Jo, having graduated from JHS in 1947 where she was Valedictorian of her class, entered NSC the following June. Capt. Harry Griffin of West Monroe this week assumed duties of commanding officer, Air Police Squadron, Rhein-Main Air Base. Capt. Griffin has already had long and active government service. After graduating from Olla-Standard High School, he entered the Civilian Corps and in 1941 joined the Army Air Corps, receiving his commission in Oct. 1942. Larry McCartney was given a birth party in his home I honor of his 4th birthday. His neighborhood friends all came to help him celebrate and enjoy birthday cake. Candy Allen enjoyed an afternoon birthday part at the Jena City Park on Saturday, April 7th for her 8th birthday. She enjoyed having her friends with her to help celebrate and to eat birthday cake, ice cream and cokes. Prices at Chapman's Grocery Store: Milk, 6 qt. A return AAU boxing matching between Jena and Jonesville will be held Saturday night at 8 p.m. at the Jena Elementary gym featuring bouts in nearly every weight division. To be featured on the Jena team are: Isaac Willis, Ira Thorla, Donald Ireland, Monroe Mitchell, Duck Hopkins, Carl Humphries, Yogi Cotton, Bud Johnson, Robert Beach, Sambo Jones, Tobe Mitchell, and Donald Savoy. 25 YEARS AGO - May 8, 1975 Winds of 70-90 mph and in places even higher, ripped through LaSalle Parish shortly after midnight last Tuesday, heavily damaging power and telephone lines, uprooting trees throughout the parish and causing damage to various homes and businesses. Either high winds or a tornado touched down on the mobile home owned and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Randy Loe of Tullos and within seconds, completely demolished the trailer home. Loe said the storm awakened him and his wife. They were getting up when the trailer just seemed to come apart at the seams. The next thing they remember, they were in the yard with trailer debris all around. It was strewn over a large area, being completely torn from the bottom frame. 4-H Queens for 1975 were pictured in the Times-Signal: Senior Queen, Miss Suzette Bradford, Jena High School; Junior Large Club Queen, Miss Laurie Ray, Jena Junior High School; Junior Small Club Queen, Miss Vickey Cooper, Nebo. The 1975 Jena Giants Baseball Team posted a record of 7-4. They were: David Howard, Jamie Ogden, Scott Maxwell, Buddy Powell, Darrell McCartney, David Charles, Mike Walker, Bubba Barron, Roger Maxwell, Monroe Jackson, Eddy Speed, Jimmy Keene, Frankie Spence, Ray McKinney, Gary Dean, Calvin Thomas, and David Powe. 10 YEARS AGO - May 9, 1990 Jerry Zeagler and Leah Wilson of Jena High School captured the State Mixed Doubles Tennis State Championship played last week. In the state finals, the Jena duo went down 2-0 in the first set before coming back strong to win the match 6-4, 6-2. Going into the District AAA state championship last week, Phoebe Walpole of the Lady Giants track team was considered the fastest 800 meter runner in the state. Rob Stevens has been chosen head cheerleader for Louisiana Tech University for the 1990-91 season. This will be his third season to be selected as a member of the Tech squad. Sheila Lee proudly displays a trophy turkey killed during March near Sibley, Miss. The prize bird had a ten inch beard, one inch spurs, and weighed 18 pounds. Sheila was hunting alone with the kill was made. Nori L. Newburg of Jena has been initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, a national honor society at NLU. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Newburg.
