Alexander, 21, is This Area's First Polio Fatality Polio visited its first fatality of the year upon this area last week when James Taliaferro Alexander, 21 year old youth of Rhinehart passed away at the polio center in Alexandria. Alexander, the son of Mrs. Addie Alexander, died at about 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, after he was stricken by the disease on Monday. Alexander was rushed almost immediately to the polio center after he was brought on Monday to the Gaharan Clinic in Jena. Almost total paralysis of the body and limbs was reported in the case. He was a member of the Baptist Church of Rhinehart. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Addie Alexander; three brothers, who are Roy Alexander, Rhinehart, Sidney Alexander, Rhinehart, and Jack Alexander of Jonesville; and five sisters, who are Mary Enterkin of Ferriday, Vera Breithaupt, Rhinehart, Ruth Corley, Jena, Nina Bell Reeves, Rhinehart, and Sybil Alexander, of Rhinehart. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. last Thursday at the Rhinehart Baptist Church, with the Rev. Baker officiating. On December 2, 1981 the Winn Parish Clerk of Court's office was recognized as one of the best organized and most efficient offices in the state his office frequently returned money to the Winn Parish Police Jury. Mr. Anders retired from that office in 1984 and was a resident of Winnfield until 2004 when he moved to Nederland. Texas to be near his daughter. Anderson Killed Instantly Saturday Near Capital Former State Senator James L. Anderson was killed near Baton Rouge Saturday night when the automobile which he was driving collided with a bus conveying several high school students from Lafayette back to their home in the capital city after attending a track rally at Southwestern Louisiana Institute. According to witnesses, the former senator's car was weaving from one side of the road to the other and was speeding at a rate of about forty-five miles per hour when the accident occurred. He suffered a fractured skull, death coming almost instantly. Senator Anderson was a former pastor of the Colfax Baptist Church and was elected as representative from Grant Parish in 1928. After the late O. K. Allen became chairman of the highway commission and resigned from the state senate from this district, Rev. Anderson, was the successful candidate for his position in the higher branch of the legislature. He was a signer of the "round robin" when fifteen senators saved the late Governor Huey P. Long from impeachment in 1929 and was considered an ardent administration supporter. At the time of his death, he was employed by the state conservation commission. Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife, four sons, one daughter, three brothers, and two sisters. Date: Feb 18, 1932 Headline: Popular Young Lady Dies After Illness of Week Sub-Headline: Miss Marie Andrews Succumbs at Shreveport Hospital Sunday The death of Miss Bertha Marie Andrews, daughter of Mr A. L. Andrews, and one of Jena's well known and pupular young ladies, caused a shock to her many friends when news of her untimely passing in a Shreveport hospital reached here Sunday morning. Miss Andrews had been in training at the Charity Hospital two years and one day at the time of her death, which was the result of penumonia. She was sick for only one week. Her father went to Shreveport when appraised of his daughter's condition and remained with here until the end came at 5 o'clock Sunday morning. The body was brought to Jena Sunday afternoon and funeral services were held from the local baptist church Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with Rev L. D. Posey, pastor, officiating. The large crowd and the banks of beautiful floral offerings both from Shreveport friends and from Jena people who had known and loved Miss Andrews bespoke the high esteem in which she was held. Two nurses of the hospital where Miss Andrews was in training accompanied the body to Jena and remained with it until it was placed in its last resting place in Nolley Memorial Cemetery Monday afternoon.
