Allen, 89, of Jena, died at 7:12 p.m., Sunday, August 2, 1998, at the LaSalle General Hospital of Jena. He was a retired truck driver in the oil field industry, a member of East Jena Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II. He was born September 10, 1908, in Valiant, Okla., to the union of James and Mary Russell Allen. Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 4, at the chapel of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena with the Revs. Albert Vickers and Johnnie Phillips officiating. Noe Takes the Oath of Office Late Tuesday P.M. Announcement was made late Tuesday that the remains of Governor Oscar K. Allen would be interred in Winnfield on Thursday afternoon. The body will go to Winnfield by train and will lie in state in the First Baptist Church from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Funeral services will start at the First Baptist Church Winnfield, at 2:30 o'clock. Governor Allen passed away at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, his death being due to a cerebral hemorrhage, with no forewarning of ill health as he was preparing to leave the executive mansion for his state house office. Lieutenant Governor James A. Noe took the oath of office as governor of Louisiana at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday. The oath was administered by John B. Fournet, justice of the state court, in the governor's private office in the state capitol as almost all of the state's high officials looked on, Mrs. Noe was also in the audience. Immediately after taking the oath, Noe issued a proclamation calling for a 30-day period of mourning, directing the closing of all state offices until Friday as a mark of respect of the death of Governor O. K. Allen. He also issued a statement which said, "all my efforts and abilities will be directed toward continuing the work of O. K. Allen. The grief of this sudden loss that Louisiana has suffered, coming so close after the loss of our beloved Senator Huey P. Long just five months ago, leaves me little to say." Noe declared. Friday Mrs. Susie Roberts Alen, 45 years of age, a native of Amite County, Miss., but for 25 years a resident of Jena, died at 2:30 pm on Christmas day. Mrs Allen had been in ill health for about four weeks and had been removed to Shreveport for medical attention, but complications that arose caused her death. In 1902, Mrs Allen was married to John Marvin Allen and for a short time they resided in St Helena Parish, La. She was a devout member of the Jena Methodist Episcopal Church. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the Jena Methodist Church by Rev. A. S. J. Neill, with interment in Nolly Memorial Cemetery. A farmer and lifetime resident of Rhinehart, Mr. Allen was a member of the Baptist Church. He is survived by one brother, J. W. Allen of Jena, and a sister Martha Hawkins of Rhinehart.
