Thus he was nearly 98 years of age. He watched America grow from a wilderness to a world power. He joined the Methodist church at 21 years of age, and remained a Methodist till the day of his death. We have never known a man who had more reverence for the church and ministry than Brother Baker. No preacher ever suffered at his hand, for he "reverenced them for their works' sake." He married Miss Sallie Davis, who was born in Catahoula Parish, at the age of 26. She lived but a few years, and to them only one child was born, Mrs. W.D. Boddy, Jena, La. After the death of his first wife, he married her sister, Miss Jane Davis, and to this union eleven children were born, ten of whom are still living. She died in April, 1919. Brother Baker was of Scotch-Irish descent, and thus represented some of the best blood American ever had, and was true to type. He ordered his home after the manner of righteousness, and the result is enough to encourage others to do likewise. Those of us who knew Sister Boddy, Will and Oscar Baker, Sisters Teddley, and Mrs. Aiken, can testify to the fact that he taught them much of Jesus while they were "growing up." Surely our Father said, "Well done," to him when he finished his journey. It was a joy to come in contact with Brother Baker. His wrinkled face radiated with the very light of heaven. He never really grew feeble. It was remarkable how he could get about almost to the day of his death. To see him surrounded by children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, reminded one of the patriarchs of old, and he seemed sublimely happy on such occasions. During his day, great events happened, among them, the Civil War, in which he served as a soldier. He helped rebuild the devastated South, and lived to bear the sorrows of the World War. He was an honest man, and wore a mantle of truth. He was loved by all who knew him, and never tired in doing good to his neighbors. He was spiritual as a Christian, true as a husband, and faithful as a father. What more can be said! May his prayers for his children and their children be answered! We are comforted in the hope we have of seeing him again. His former pastor, HENRY T. YOUNG ========== ----------------------- BAKER, Lorraine Russell ----------------------- Submitted by :Kathy LeMay Kelly P.O.
