Clippings at the LaSalle Parish Library located in Jena, LaSalle Parish, LA Date: February 14, 2001, Wednesday Headline: Area Deaths – Former POW died at Nebo Home on Thursday James Walter Beck, 80, of Nebo, died at 6:45 p.m., Thursday, February 8, 2001, at LaSalle General Hospital of Jena. He was a retired executive with Continental Airlines. Beck was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He was the last of two surviving prisoners of war (POWs) living in the Jena area. S/Sgt Beck entered the Army in 1940 and was serving with the 200 Coast Artillery Regiment of the New Mexico National Guard when he was captured in the Philippines by the Japanese on April 9, 1942. For the next three years he remained in prison camps in the Philippines and Japan. He was in the "Bataan Death March" – a 65 mile death march from where he was captured to Camp O'Donnell, known as the "death camp." During the four-day, 65-mile march, prisoners received very little food and water and if they didn't keep up, they were killed by the Japanese. In early 1944, Beck was taken by a Japanese "Hell Ship", loaded with about 5,000 prisoners, to a prison camp in Japan. During the three-month trip on the ship, prisoners again were given almost no food and water and the ship was attacked by U.S. forces. He was finally set free in September 1945, three and one-half years after his capture. He was born in Hereford, Texas, but raised at Clovis, New Mexico. After the war and his discharge, he married and around 1988, he and his wife moved to nebo where she had relatives. Incidentally, Beck had a brother, Edgar Beck, who was also with him as a POW. Edgar died in 1953. Services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 12, in Mt. Nebo Baptist Church on Nebo with the Revs. Gary Norris and Mack Walker officiating. Microfilm at the LaSalle Parish Library located in Jena, LaSalle Parish, La. Date: September 1, 1927 Headline: Girl Killed by Freight Train Saturday P.M. Miss Patsy D. Beck, aged 19, died at an Alexandria sanitarium early Saturday morning after suffering for several hours from injuries received when the touring car she was driving was struck by an L. & A. freight train at Midway, one mile west of Jena Friday afternoon. Miss Beck, accompanied by her grandmother, Mrs. Fannie McAnnally with whom she makes her home on Funny Louis Creek, was enroute to Good Pine when the accident occurred. It is thought that she did not see the freight train as it approached the crossing at Midway until she was too close to the track. Realizing her danger, the young lady sped her car up in an effort to get across before the train struck, but her efforts were futile and the front end of the engine struck her car, throwing her twenty feet from the scene of the accident, crushing her jawbone, breaking her left arm and shoulder. Mrs. McAnnally was also severely injured, but late reports from the hospital state that her condition is very much improved. Miss Beck was the daughter of Frank Beck and they made their home with Mrs. McAnnally. Besides her father and her grandmothers, she is survived by her one uncle, Charles Whatley, of Trout, and two aunts, Mrs. G. T. Reson and Mrs. S. P. LaCroix, both of Trout. BISHOP, LaSalle Parish, Louisiana Submitted by: Doug McBroom 902 Kilgore Court Allen, TX, 75013 Source: The Jena Times - Olla Tullos Signal; Jena, LaSalle Parish, La. Microfilm at the LaSalle Parish Library located in Jena, LaSalle Parish, La. Date: March 19, 1931 Headline: Jena Man's Father Called by Death Sub-Headline: Marshal W. H. Bishop Spends Part of Week in New Orleans Marshal W. H. Bishop returned to Jena Wednesday night from New Orleans where he attended the funeral of his father, who was buried Sunday. While there he stayed over for the Peace Officers' Convention, which was held in the Crescent City Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Mr. Bishop brought back a letter he found among his father's personal effects; he also found newspapers dated February 27, 1910, and a statement dated 1905. The letter, which is incomplete, only pages 19, 20, 23 and 24 being found, is an unusually interesting piece of manuscript, which was apparently written about the time the Federal troops were entering Arkansas, as the letter refers to the writer making a trip with a yoke of oxen, a horse, a slave boy, and of him encountering Federal troops near Batesville, and that he learned the troops were moving on Little Rock. The writer traveled day and night to outdistance the moving army. The letter is written on "foolscap" paper, very legibly penned and with few exceptions, where the ink has faded, it can be clearly read. With Mr. Bishop's permission, The Times will perhaps have the four pages of this letter set into type and carry it in this paper at a future date. It will no doubt prove interesting to many readers. ========== Obituary of HENRY M.
