Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 17, at Delhomme Bertrand Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Stone W. Caraway, pastor of the Aubury United Methodist Church, officiating. Branton was a native of White Bluff, Miss., and had been a resident of Lafayette for the past 22 years and was a retired petroleum engineering consultant. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II, attended the University of Southern Mississippi and graduated from the University of Oklahoma. He had worked in Texas, New Orleans and Lafayette for various Petroleum and drilling companies. In 1970, he founded J.A. Branton, Inc., a consultation firm and continued in that capacity until his retirement in 1985. Survivors include his wife, the former Earlene Mann of Lafayette (formerly of Jena); two daughter, Elsie Ann Croom of Lafayette and Vicky Carol Branton of Nashville. Date: March 22, 1962, Thursday Headline: Parents Of Mrs. Mabel Clark Die Mr. and Mrs. Virgil V. Brassell, parents of Mrs. Mabel Clark of Jena died within weeks of each other recently. Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Viola Brassell, 76, were held February 25 at 2:30 p.m. at the Northside Baptist church in Conroe, Texas. She died after a lengthy illness. The Rev. H.M. Dry officiated at the services and burial followed in the Willis cemetery. She was a member of the Eastern Star. Two weeks later, on March 12, at 2:30 p.m., services for Mr. Brassell, 80, were held at the same church. He had also been ill for some time. Rev. Dry officiated and burial was in the Willis cemetery, also. He was a member of the Masnic Lodge of Conroe. Survivors of the couple include six daughters, Mrs. Elmer R. Beverle of Flint, Mich., Mrs. Ruby Robbins, Mrs. Carl Hilbig and Mrs. Stanley Gardner of Houston, Texas, Mrs. Mabel Clark of Jena and Mrs. Olan Hassell of Palestine, Texas; one son, Prentis of Conroe; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great- grandchildren. Mrs. Brassell is also survived by one brother, Sam Mullen of Shreveport. MR. Brassell is survived by a sister, Mrs. Fannie M. Faraker of Willits, Calif. Brewton well known local banker and Vice-President of the Bank of Jena, died at the home of Mr. Brewton, here on Saturday, August 1 at 12:45 of high blood pressure and other maladies. Mrs. Brewton was born at Kosciusko, Miss. On Jan 1, 1852, her maiden name being Francis Elizabeth Juarrels. She moved to Winn parish near Goldonna while a child and lived there until her death. Deceased was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter at Goldonna and also the Baptist church there. She was well known in Jena where she had visited many times and had many friends here who learn with sorrow of her death. Funeral services were held on Sunday, August 2 at Goldonna with Rev. B.T. Godwin of Jena and Rev. Roberts of Provence in charge. Interment was in the Goldonna cemetery. Mrs. Brewton is survived by four sons, E.L. Brewton and J.H. Brewton, brother of Walter Brewton, LaSalle Parish Assessor, died from a stroke of paralysis at his home in Ferriday on Friday, February 4th; at 3:00 p.m. Mr. Brewton, who was a former resident of Jena, was engaged in business as a merchant at the time of his death. He had made many friends here, and his death came as a distinct shock to this entire community. Coming here several years ago from Goldonna, he made Jena his home for quite some time, after which he moved to Jonesville and then to Ferriday. His wife is the former Miss Lizzie Reid, of Castor, and his parents were: Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Brewton, who are no longer living. Mr. Brewton was of Baptist faith, a Mason, and fifty-seven years and seven months of age at the time of his death. Funeral services were held at his home in Ferriday, with Rev. Brewton, Former Tax Assessor William Walter Brewton, 65, prominent Jena citizen and member of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Jena, died suddenly at his residence in Jena Monday morning. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Jena, with rev. J. P. Owens, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment was in Nolley memorial Cemetery under the direction of Kinner and Stevens Home for Funerals. A Masonic service was conducted at the gravesite by Michael Dempsey Lodge No. 327, F and AM. Mr. Brewton was an outstanding public servant in LaSalle Parish. He served 12 years as LaSalle Parish Tax Assessor, many years as vice president of the Bank of Jena and four years as Bank President. He was elected tax assessor in the year 1936 and was reelected in 1940 and 1944. He was elected President of the Bank of Jena on Aug. 21, 1941, and served until the presidency changed in August 1945. Mr. Brewton was a member of the Baptist Church; a member of Michael Dempsey lodge No. 327, F and AM, Jena; a member of Royal Arch Chapter No. 86, Urania; and a member of Knight Templer, Trinity Commandery No. 8, Alexandria. Born at Goldonna on Jan. 6, 1896, Mr. Brewton came to Jena in the year 1916. In the year 1918, he was married to Sadie Smith, who survives him. Survivors in addition to his wife are a son, William Walter Brewton, Jr., of Jena; a daughter, Mrs. Walterine Durham of Memphis, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. Lillian Terral of Mansfield, and Mrs. S. S. Powe family at Rosefield while on vacation when a wasp stung his right ear shortly after noon. He went into convulsions and passed out and the family brought him to a clinic in Jena. He was given a shot and was sent to the Jena hospital for oxygen. He was dead on arrival at the hospital. It was reported he had been stung by a wasp two or three weeks ago, also.
