Microfilm at the LaSalle Parish Library located in Jena, LaSalle Parish, La. Date: April 23, 1936, Thursday Headline: Mrs. J. Dosher Dies as Result of Car Wreck Sub-headline: Her Auto Collides with Truck Near Jena on Monday Mrs. John Dosher, 24, of Lake Charles, who was injured near Jena Monday in an auto-truck crash, died at the Baptist Hospital in Alexandria at 8;30 o'clock that night and her body was conveyed to her home in Lake Charles where funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Dosher with her three small daughters was enroute from her home in Lake Charles to visit her husband's mother, Mrs. R. H. Dosher who resides in Jena. Upon reaching the home of S. H. Finley between Trout and White Sulphur Springs, the car met a gravel truck driven by Vernon Owens, an employee of the Hearin & Brown Company, Baton Rouge contractors. The truck and automobile collided completely wrecking the Chevrolet driven by Mrs. Dosher and turning the gravel truck over. Mrs. Dosher, as well as her three small daughters, was given first aid in Mr. Finley's home, after which the ambulance of Kinner & Stevens was called and she was conveyed to the Alexandria Hospital. The injured woman suffered a fractured skull and other injuries, her death being attributed to the fracture and to the shock occasioned by the collision. The little girls were not seriously injured and were brought to their grandmother's home after being given first aid. The truck driver was badly shaken up and suffered body bruises, but nothing of a serious nature according to the attending physician. It is believed that Mrs. Dosher lost control of her car due to the loose gravel at this point in the road. She is survived by her husband, John Dosher, formerly of Jena; three daughters, her mother, Mrs. A. W. Stewart; two sisters, Mrs. Tom Clark and Mrs. A. O. Broussard and one uncle, Lee L. Microfilm located at the LaSalle Parish Library in Jena, LaSalle Parish, La. Date: March 1, 1928 Headline: Owen Dosher Dies at Houston; Buried at Harrisonburg, La. Owen Dosher, former resident and political figure of Catahoula Parish, was buried last Sunday in the family cemetery at Harrisonburg. Mr. Dosher was formerly of Harrisonburg, being a son of the late John Dosher, ex-sheriff of Catahoula Parish for several years, and having served several years in the capacity of Chief of Police in the city of Shreveport. He left his home at Harrisonburg when a young man and became a figure in the political world while very young. The death of his wife caused Mr. Dosher to lose all ambitions and aspirations, after which he moved to Houston, Tex., where he lived for several years, not even letting his relatives know of his whereabouts. Not long ago the family learned, through a friend, that he was in Houston and in bad health. The eldest brother, M. D. T. Dosher, of Jonesville, went to Houston to find him so as to bring him back home. When Mr. Dosher found him, he hardly recognized him, for he was in a dying condition. When the dying man was asked if he knew his brother, he replied that he knew him to be one of his brothers, but he did not know which one. Mr. Dosher went to a hotel and on his return the next morning he found that his brother had died during the night. The body was moved to Harrisonburg, where interment was made by a host of forgotten friends and relatives. ========== --------------------------- DOSHER, Tollie Owen "Dutch" --------------------------- Submitted by: Doug McBroom 15520 Swan Lake Blvd. Gulfport, MS 39503 Submitted: March 2000 Source: The Jena Times - Olla Tullos Signal; Jena, LaSalle Parish, La. Date: Wednesday, June 13, 1990 Headline: Woodie Dosher...Famed Jena cager succumbs at age 73 Funeral services were held here Sunday for Woodie B. Dosher of Dallas, a member of some of the most memorable Jena High School basketball teams of the 1930's that always ranked among the best in the state. Dosher, 73, died in Dallas, Thursday after a long illness. He had retired in 1980 after serving 35 years with Hughes Tool Company, stationed at various times in Ruston, Shreveport, Dallas, Enid, Okla., Fort Smith, Ark., and Warwick, Rhode Island. At the time of his retirement, Dosher was in charge of offshore drilling operations for Hughes on the east coast, stationed at Warwick. His illustrious high school basketball career began at Jena High School in 1931, immediately following the nationally-acclaimed Jena teams of the 1920's which competed for the national high school championship in Chicago, once the runnerup to the champion Athens, Tex. The legendary Sparky Wade and Nick Medica were members of those teams. Dosher played six years of prep basketball and was the leader of the 1936 Jena team which won the state championship at a time when there were no different classifications of teams. Jay Paul Wade, editor and publisher of the Jena Times chronicle the 1936 team's march to the state title, starting with the championship of the Central Louisiana tourney in Pineville. In the state tourney, the Jena team had to win five consecutive games that began with a 38-11 rout of Brusly. The second Giant victim was Istrouma of Baton Rouge, the pre-tourney favorite, in a 45-15 romp. Harris High School, the defending champ, was upended 22-16, and Jena downed Jesuit High School of New Orleans 42-30 in the semi-finals. In the state championship contest, Jena defeated Coushatta 27-20 and Dosher and Wilfrid (Gopher) Gaharan of Jena were all-state first team selections. Dosher was chosen the team captain and was recipient of the first Sparky Wade Most Valuable Player trophy. Other Starters on the 1936 state championship team, in addition to Dosher and Gaharan, were Frank Doughty, M.J. Haynes, and Fred (Chilli) Lees. Other squad members were Bill Hodges, Earl Doughty, John Allen, Leland Ganey, Jones Bradford and G.D. Anders. The late Dr. T.H. (Bud) Gaharan was coach of the team. Ex-teammate Frank Doughty said that "Woodie was just a great natural athlete. He did not have great size but he had speed, elusiveness, and desire. He could also just as well been an outstanding football player of a track star." Dosher also played semi-professional baseball and was awarded an athletic scholarship to Louisiana State University after completing his high school career. He was a starter on the LSU freshmen basketball team and played three varsity seasons as a guard at LSU under the late Coach Harry Rabenhorst. Dosher joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 and spent five years in the military service, attaining the rank of captain. He was employed by Hughes Tool Company in Ruston in 1946 where he spent a number of years before other assignments with the company. Services for Dosher were held in the Kinner and Stevens chapel, with the Rev. Kerfoot Brooks and the Rev. Albert Vickers officiating. The Rev. Brooks was a basketball official at one time and officiated in many of the Jena games in which Dosher played. They were personal friends of long standing. Interment was in the Jena Cemetery. Dosher is survived by his wife of 48 years, Hazel Wynn Dosher, a native of Sicily Island; one daughter, Kathy Wilcox of Dallas; one son, Richard Dosher of Dallas; and two sisters, Mrs. Trudie McCluer of Little Rock, and Mrs. Lydia Flowers of Jena. Sub-Headline: Mystery Surrounds Death of Nick Douglas, Found on Vacant Lot Here Nick Douglas, middle aged Negro man, was found dead on a lot between Edward's Cafe and the old Garrett Jewelry store building on Oak Street early Wednesday morning. One shot, supposedly fired from a pistol entered his neck and protruded through, coming out at the back of his body just below the collar bone. Local officers are on the opinion that Douglas was killed early Tuesday night, although his body was not discovered until early Wednesday morning. A coroner's jury consisting of Alex Richey, Jess M. Whatley, J. W. Green, A. P. Willis and W. H. Bishop, was empaneled shortly after the body was discovered by Dr. J. A. Gaharan, parish coroner. They examined the body and its surroundings and called another meeting of the jury for 3:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at which time ten witnesses were summoned to appear and testify in the case. The jury had not reported its deliberations at the time of going to press Wednesday afternoon. Douglas had been a resident of this section throughout his entire lifetime and had worked for many white families in Jena. Outside of drinking he bore a good reputation and his relatives were at loss to understand any motive for the killing. Sheriff Barlow Thompson and his deputies continued their investigation of the case, but were awaiting a full investigation by the coroner's jury before making any arrests in the case. ========== ------------------- DOWLING, Oscar, Dr. ------------------- Copied and Submitted by: Doug McBroom, 902 Kilgore Court, Allen, TX, 75013 Submitted: December 2001 Source: The Jena Times - Olla Tullos Signal; Jena, LaSalle Parish, La. Dr. Dowling served for more than a quarter of a century as president of the Louisiana State Board of Health, being the man known far and wide as the father of health work in this state. Dr. Dowling was killed on the ferry at New Orleans when was run over by a train as he stepped from the pullman on which he was riding. The body was shipped to Ozark, Ala., on Saturday night. It was at this town, the former home of Dr. Dowling, that the funeral services were held. Men high in medical and health circles all over this state, as well as thousands of friends in this state and others, were this week mourning the passing of one of Louisiana's leading citizens. It was recalled this week that the last time Dr. Dowling was in LaSalle Parish was in 1928, when he came here with the now famous health exhibit car. This educational moving exhibit was only one of the many things Dr. Dowling instituted as head of the health work in Louisiana. Dr. W. V. Taylor, LaSalle Parish health head, and the dean of all Louisiana physicians, who has been a personal friend of Dr. Dowling for a score of years, said this week that he felt that Louisiana had lost one her leading figures. He was profuse in his praise of Dr. Dowling and the work he had done. He said that the medical ranks of the state had suffered a distinct loss, one which he felt could not be soon filled. ========== ----------- DOYLE, Dick ----------- Submitted by: Doug McBroom 902 Kilgore Court Allen, TX, 75013 Submitted: December 2001 From The Jena Times - Olla Tullos Signal; Jena, LaSalle Parish, La.
