A 61-year old Californian was booked on suspicion of drunk driving after his car swerved across the center line and collided with the car in which Mr. and Mrs. Dayton C. Greer of Pineville were riding. The Greer's son, 17-year old, Jimmy, driver of the car, was not injured. Passengers in three other cars that collided in attempting to avoid the wreckage escaped serious injury. The Greers were en route home after visiting an older son, Jeff. The couple owns a motel near Pineville. ***************************************************************************************************** Alexandria Daily Town Talk June 19, 1962 Rapides Couple Killed in Wreck in California (Special to The Town Talk) Barstow, Calif., --- Two members of a Tioga, La., family were killed today in a five-car crash 30 miles northeast of here. Officers said Dayton C. Greer, 59, and his wife, Mordelle, were killed when their auto was struck head-on by a car driven by Edward P. Sheehan, 61, of Hinckley, Calif., whose car swerved across the center line. Mr. and Mrs. Greer, who owned and operated a motel in Lee Heights, were vacationing in California where one of their sons, Jeff Greer, is stationed with the Navy. Another son, Jimmy Greer, 17, was driving when the accident occurred. He escaped uninjured. Officers said Sheehan was booked on suspicion of drunk driving. ****************************************************************************** Alexandria Daily Town Talk June 20, 1962 Greer's Funeral Arrangements Pend Funeral arrangements for Mr. and Mrs. Dayton C. Greer of Tioga, killed Monday in an auto crash in California, were incomplete today. The bodies are to arrive in Alexandria at 3 A.M. Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Greer, who owned and operated a motel at Lee Heights, are survived by two sons, Jimmy Greer of Tioga, and Jeff Greer, serving in the Navy in California. Greer, 59, is survived by his mother, Mrs. James Greer of Jena: a sister, Mrs. Barney Gardner (Thelma) of Natchez, Miss., and two brothers, Aaron Greer of Jena, and Aubrey Greer of Los Angeles, Calif. He was a member of the Jena Masonic Lodge and a member and past president of the Ward 10 Lions Club. Mrs. Greer, 46, is survived by four brothers, B.J. Elston, Lee Elston, and Linton Elston, all of Kemp, Texas, and Lool Elston of New Orleans, and six sisters, Mrs. Arthur Struck and Mrs. Audrey Vail of Kemp, Mrs. Joe Eicke of Oklahoma, Mrs. Tince Blalock and Mrs. W.W. Greer of Tioga will be at 10 A.M. Saturday in the Eden Methodist Church in Jena. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Greer, who owned and operated a motel at Lee Heights, were killed Monday in an auto crash in California. The bodies are to arrive in Alexandria at 3:25 A.M. Friday. They will lie in state at Hixson Bros. Funeral Home in Alexandria until 4 P.M. Friday, when they will be transferred to Hixson Bros. in Jena. The bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Greer, killed in a California auto accident, failed to arrive in Alexandria early today as scheduled and were to be here at 3:25 P.M. today. The remains will be at Hixson Bros. Funeral Home here until 8:30 A.M. Saturday. Funeral services are to be conducted from the Eden Methodist Church of Jena at 2:30 P.M. Saturday. Greer and his wife Mrs. Mordelle Elston Greer, who were killed in an automobile accident near Barstow, Calif., Tuesday were held at 2:30 P.M. Saturday. The Reverends John D. Shearer, Barnett Ates, E.W. Sandell and John C. Rousseaux officiated at the services at the Eden Methodist Church near Jena. Interment was in the Eden Cemetery. Pallbearers for Mr. Greer were J.B. Turnley, E.R. Cornwall, M.B. Steen, Tom Burch, John Dayton, and J.E. Turnley. Honorary pallbearers were Bolton Walker and J. Pipes. This article also printed in the Jena Newspaper NO DATE AVAILABLE Dayton Greer and Wife Die In Car Wreck In California Mr. and Mrs. Dayton C. Greer, 59 and 46, respectively, of Pineville were killed Monday, June 18 in a five-car crash on Highway 466, 30 miles northeast of Barstow, Calif. Edward P. Shehan, 61, of Hinckley, Calif. was booked on a charge of drunken driving as a result of the wreck. He was later charged with manslaughter. Twenty people were injured in the wreck and several injured when Shehan reportedly crossed the center line into the path of the Greer car. Their son, Jim, 17, was driving at the time of the accident, but was uninjured. The Greers had been to California on a vacation. They visited Mr. Greer's brother, James A. Greer in San Gatos, Calif. and a son, Jeff, who is in the Navy and stationed at San Francisco. They were starting the return trip at the time of the wreck. The couple owned and operated a motel in Pineville. The bodies will arrive Friday at Hixson Brothers funeral home in Jena. Funeral services will be at Eden Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. J. B. Shearer of Jackson, La. and the Rev. J. C. Rousseaux of Eden will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Hixson Brothers. Mr. Greer is survived by another brother, Aaron C. Greer of Trout; a sister, Mrs. Barney Gardner of Natchez, Miss.; and his mother, Mrs. James U. Greer of Trout. Mrs. Greer is survived by a number of sisters and brothers in Dallas, Texas.
