(No Relation.) Submitted: February 2006 Source: The Jena Times - Olla Tullos Signal; Jena, LaSalle Parish, LA. Clippings at the LaSalle Parish Library located in Jena, LaSalle Parish, LA. Date: February 4, 1954, Thursday Headline: Robert Ganey Dies of Electrical Burns Funeral services for James Robert Ganey, age 44, were held today (Thursday) Feb 4 at 3 p.m. from Searcy Baptist Church. Rev. Oscar Bradford conducted the services. Interment was in Chalk Hill Cemetery near Little Creek under direction of Hixson Bros. Funeral Home. Robert Ganey died at 10:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 3, in Jena Hospital. Death resulted from burns received when he came in contact with an oilfield truck which was in contact with a power line, about 3 p.m., Monday, Feb. 1. According to reliable sources, Mr. Ganey, who was employed as a tool pusher by Trichel Construction Co., and Billy Trichel, son of the company's owner, were engaging in transporting part of an oil well pumping unit to the Mary Price Lease in Nebo Field. At the intersection of the Hunt Oil Co. warehouse road and State Highway 57, the "horsehead" (one end of the walking beam on a pumping rig, resembling in shape a horse's head) caught an overhead line. Ganey, who was riding on the truck, climbed up and attempted to lift the wire over the rig but failed to do so when he felt a shock from the line, which they assumed was a telephone line according to Billy Trichel. Ganey jumped from the truck to get a stick with which to dislodge the wire. When he started to mount the truck, which was charged with about 7600 volts of electricity from the REA power line, he grounded the charge and "froze" to the truck. Trichel, the driver, attempted to start the motor and pull away from the line, but was shocked by contact with the switch key. Answering his yells for help, Mrs. Sherwood, living nearby came out, realized what was happening and called her son-in-law, Hobson Coon. Coon rushed into his home and called Hunt's Warehouse for help. Meantime, it is conjectured, sufficient compression leaked from the motor cylinders to allow the truck to roll backward breaking contact releasing Ganey, after some five minutes of contact. He was rushed to Jena Hospital by Hixson Bros. Ambulance. Ganey suffered third degree electrical and thermal burns over 85 per cent of the body. Thermal burns were sustained when his clothes were burned off. The deceased is survived by his wife and one son, Bobby Glenn; parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Ganey of Trout; six brothers, Gordon and Dewitt Ganey of Trout; Durham Ganey, U. S. Air Force; Owen Ganey, Odessa, Texas; Ira A.
