Russell Haynes, 73, of Gardner, Kansas, and a native of Jena, died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at his home. He was born August 12, 1924, in Columbia, graduated from Jena High School in 1942 and had lived in Gardner since 1946. He served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at the Olathe Naval Air Station in the 1940's where he met his wife of 52 years, Ethel Smith. The couple married Nov. 17, 1946, in Olathe. Haynes also served in the South Pacific during World War II as a 1st class AMMH before coming to Gardner. He was the owner and operator of the Gardner Recreation Hall from 1946 until the mid-1950's. He owned Russ's TV and Repair Shop for 38 years before retiring in 1985. He was a 50-year member of the Gardner American Legion and served as commander for several terms; a 50-year Gardner Mason; and a 50-year member of the Gardner Eastern Star. He was a member of the Abdallah Shrine in Overland Park, the Scottish Rite in Lawrence and a lifetime member of the Gardner VFW. He was active in founding the Little League ball clubs in Gardner and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Gardner. Services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 11, at First Baptist Church in Gardner followed with a military graveside service by the Gardner VFW and American Legion at the Gardner Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Ethel Haynes of Gardner; two sons, Stan Haynes of Merriam and Steve D. Haynes of Deer Park, Texas; two brothers, M. J. Haynes and Orville Haynes, both of Alexandria.
