Hayes, 88, prominent businessman and president of Lumbermen's Supply Co., Inc. of Monroe, died Saturday at St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were at 4 p.m. Sunday at Kilpatrick Funeral Home Chapel in Monroe with the Revs. Earl C. Whitsitt and Nicolas D. Pearce officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Mausoleum. Mr. Hayes was born on Freestate Plantation in South Caroline and moved with his family to Latta, S.C. in 1902. After attending Hartsville Military Academy, he trained as a mortgage broker in Newport, VA. He came to Shreveport, in 1909, where he and his partner operated a mortgage and real estate office. He spent a brief time in New Mexico in the cattle busines, but returned to his business in Shreveport. Later he operated sawmills near Cotton Valley, where he established a retail lumber yard uring the oil boom. At one time he operated a chain of lumber yards in North Louisiana and Texas. H.R. Lumber Co. In West Monroe was founded in 1927. Lumbermen's Supply Co., Inc. in Monroe was established in 1934, the first wholesale building in Northeast Louisiana. Mr. Hayes had resided in Monroe continuously since March 1942. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Sue Davis Hayes; three daughters, Mrs. Joseph Cecil Brown, Jr. Mrs. Reynolds Trippett Faulk Jr. and Mrs. James Pascal Norris Jr., all of Monroe, one half-sister Mrs. Frank Nascimento of Latto, S.C.; nine grandchildren and ......
