He was a retired switcher in the oil industry. Born May 4, 1927, at Houlka, Mississippi, he is the son of the late James Monroe and Modess C. Thomas Morphis. Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, 1998, in the chapel of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home in Jena with the Revs. Ricky Gresham and Terry Townsend officiating. Interment followed in the Jena Cemetery under direction of Kinner and Stevens, Inc. of Jena. Survivors include his wife, Mae Morphis of Jena; two daughters, Theresa M. Beagan and Lesia M. Whatley, both of Jena; three sons, Larry Rush Morphis, James Monroe Morphis and Billy Rad Morphis, all of Jena; one sister, Ruth McCartney of Jena; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were sons-in-law, Mike Beagan and Chuck Whatley and grandsons, Lee Morphis, Lucas Morphis, Chris Beagan and Rad Morphis. (The Jena Times, Wednesday, March 4, 1998)
