"Jack" Nelson, 81, of Winnsboro, died Tuesday, March 10, 1998 at the Franklin Medical Center in Winnsboro. He was a native of Ruston and a resident of Winnsboro, where he founded Nelson tractor Co. in 1948. He was a graduate of Ruston High School, attended La. Tech and graduated from LSU in 1936. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Winnsboro where he served as the "Unofficial chaplain" of Franklin Medical Center and Winnsboro Nursing Homes. Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 13, at First Baptist Church in Winnsboro with Drs. Harry Boyd and Max Lee officiating. Interment followed in the Providence Memorial Cemetery in Winnsboro under direction of Riser First National Home of Winnsboro. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Laverne Russell Nelson of Winnsboro; two daughters, Martha Ann Miller of Baker and Rosemary Elrod of Franklin, Tn.; two sons, Bob Nelson of Winnsboro and Jim Nelson of Ruston; two sisters and two brothers, Edna Defreese and Loy Nelson, both of Ruston, Billy Nelson of Franklinton, and Nelwyn Jahncke of Atlanta, Ga.; 11 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Elmo Blackmon, Cliff Lord, Robert Lowe, Jerry Thomas, Charles Varnado and Owen White. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of First Baptist Church.
