Nichols, 81, of Alexandria and formerly of Jena, died at 12:15 p.m. Monday, August 10, at St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria. Services were held in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral home at 1`:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 12 with Dr. Lee Weems officiating. Burial followed in Woodland Memorial Park Cemetery of Jena under direction of Hixson Brothers, Inc. He was a native of Nacogdoches, Texas and a member and deacon of Emmanuel Baptist Church. He transferred from Barksdale Air Force Base, Bossier City to England Air Force Base in 1954 where he retired as aircraft maintenance supervisor. He received the Carnegie Medal in 1955 for saving the lives of three men at Chicot Lake near Ville Platte and in 1973 was named employee of the year at England Air Force Base. Survivors include his wife, Verda Smith Nichols of Alexandria; one daughter, Jaunza Nichols Sanson of Spring, Texas; three sisters, Dessie Nichols Burnham of Port Allen, Geneva Nichols Sigmon of Houston, Texas, and Julia Nichols Jeter of Bossier City; one brother, Leland Nichols of Jena; and five grandchildren.
