According to local officers the two young men were in a heated argument over a pair of pants. Tom is said to have grasped the younger boy about the waist, striking him in the eye and on the jaw, the latter being broken by the blow. Ralph is said to have been knocked off the porch where the fight occurred, breaking his neck almost instantly. No charges were filed against the older boy, the officers considering that Ralph's death was accidental. Both of the young men were well thought of in their community and the affair, while regrettable, has cast a vale of sorrow over the enter community of Midway. Young Barker leaves his father and mother, three sisters and two brothers to mourn his passing. The family has been residing at Midway for the past ten years and none of the boys have ever been in any trouble before. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Belah Cemetery.
