From The Jena Times - Olla Tullos Signal Microfilm located at the LaSalle Parish Library in Jena. Date: Thursday, May 20, 1943 Luther C. Ballard Accidently Killed Friday, May 14 Luther C. Ballard, 33, Insurance salesman for First National Life Insurance Company of Olla, was fatally injured at approximately 11 a.m. Friday, when his gun, reported to be a twelve gauge, sawed-off pump gun, was accidently discharged. Mrs. Ballard was said to be at the grocery store when the accident occurred, having left her husband cleaning and oiling the gun, after planning a hunting trip for the week end. The Sheriff's department was called and LaSalle Parish coroner, Dr. J. A. Gaharan, who held the inquest, rendered a report of "having met death by accidental gunshot wound". Ballard was a lifetime resident of Olla and was a member of the Urania Baptist Church, where funeral services were held on May 14 at 4 p.m. with Rev. loy E. Baird of Olla and Rev. Bird of Urania officiating. He leaves besides his wife Mrs. Estelle Ballard, his mother, Mrs. P. M. Ballard of Shreveport, one brother, Rudolph, one half brother Carter of Shreveport and two half sisters, Mrs. L. B. Wilson of Shreveport and Mrs. J. W. Cupples of Olla. Interment took place at Urania cemetery under the direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena.
