Mrs. Coon died Monday morning at the Baptist Hospital in Alexandria following a long illness. The Revs. W. O. Lynch and O. W. Spinks conducted the final rites, with interment following in Nolley Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena. Due to Mrs. Coon's death, classes at Jena Elementary School were dismissed for the day Tuesday and classes at other parish schools in the South end of the parish were dismissed an hour early. Beginning at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon, faculty members on two-hour shifts maintained a vigil until 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. F. H. Shiel, parish superintendent of schools, expressed "the sincere regrets and feeling of great loss on the part of the parish school board and all school personnel of LaSalle Parish at the untimely death of Mrs. Coon who was one of our best teachers." J. V. Moffett, Jr., president of the school board, also extended his sympathy "personally, and on behalf of the school board." Mrs. Coon had taught in the LaSalle Parish public school system for 17 years and, as far as records were available for a quick check, all of that time had been on the faculty of the Jena Elementary School, Mr. Shiel said. At the close of the 1956-57 school year, her 17th as a teacher, she requested and was granted a one-year sabbatical leave, Mr. Shiel said. A faithful and loyal member of the Methodist Church, Mrs. Coon is survived by her husband, Vernon B. Coon of Jena; one daughter, Sandra Nell of Jena; a brother, Lanys Jones of Jena; two sisters, Mrs. Ollie Woods and Mrs. Myrtle Morris, both of Monroe, and her parents, Mrs. Bethel V. Jones of Monroe and W. E. Jones of Jena. Serving as pallbearers for the final rites were Fred Coon, Jr., a nephew; Dargan Brooks, principal of Jena High School; Jeddie Ray Hodges, Jena high school vocational agriculture teacher; Milton Swazey, husband of Mrs. Meddie Swazey, a fellow faculty member of Mrs. Coon; Lamar Gibson, principal of Jena Elementary School, and Sheppard Chevallier, Jimmy Coleman, and Kelly Crews, Jena elementary school faculty members.
