He died November 23, 1945. During his illness he was courageous to the last -- ever patient in his suffering -- always saying: "Thinks will come out all right." In 1921, I met Earl Gallaher of Trout, La. At that time, Earl was a boy of 12 or 13 years of age. From that time until his recent demise it was my privilege to be closely associated with him and I have always known him as one who, early in life, had a fixed desire to follow Christ in service and devotion in this life. Even then, as a boy, his warm and sincere character made him universally well-liked by those who knew him -- young and old, and in all walks of life. He was admired and loved by the colored folks, many of whom knew the family. In his school life, Earl's lovable disposition brought him outstanding popularity with his school mates -- a popularity which ripened into deeply cherished friendships as he grew to manhood. At the close of his last year in high school he maintained his high scholastic standing by winning a medal of honor for best essay on flood control, given by the Interstate Bank and Trust Co., of New Orleans. Two years of study followed in Southern Methodist University at Dallas, Texas, in 1930-31. Later he finished Draughon's business course at Shreveport. Earl was a true member of the M. E. Church South. He not only supported its program, but lent his support to other denominations and spiritual causes with a forthrightness that won him the love and respect of those with whom he was associated. On February 5, 1935, he received E. A. Degree. February 19, 1935, he received Fellow Craft. February 26, 1937, received Third Degree. October 30, 1935, Earl went before the Grand Lecturer and received his certificate of proficiency. Later he was elected WM of Carrietta Lodge No. 312 in the year 1940. He was elected Worthy Patron of O. E. S. Asenth M. Green Chapel 196, Trout, La., where he served with distinction and devotion and was loved by all. To his father and mother his life was one of loyalty and devotion. In his business life, Earl was timekeeper for Good Pine Lumber Co., of Good Pine, La., later going into the Bank of Jena, where at the time of his death, he held a position as assistant cashier and was a member of the board of directors. Until his death, he was actively interested in the oil industries LaSalle Parish. In his business life, as in fraternal and social activities, Earl maintained an attitude of quiet courtesy and pleasantness -- a combination of qualitites of rare value in this world of today -- qualities which will keep forever fresh amoung his many friends and loved ones, the memory of Earl Davis Gallaher.
