According to reports the negro, evidently intoxicated, was sleeping near the track with his head on a cross tie. The engineer did not see him until it was too late to stop the motor car and as a result the steps hit him, turning his body around and badly mangling his legs, bringing instant death. Coroner Dr J. A. Gaharan assembled a jury and their verdict stated that the negro came to his death after being hit by the motor car. He is said to have resided in Minden, but was well known in the negro quarters here.
