Neyland, 35, operator of a novelty company in Alexandria with manslaughter in connection with the death of Jimmie Holt, aged 46, former beer garden proprietor, was filed by the district attorney's office. Neyland was released from the Rapides jail after posting a bond of $1,000, fixed by Judge L. L. Hooe. Holt, who was shot in the head with a .38 caliber bullet about 11 o'clock Sunday night at Mathews' Beer Garden at Texas Avenue and The Masonic Drive died at the Baptist Hospital at 1:30 o'clock Monday morning. Dr. S. L. Calhoun, Rapides Parish Coroner, viewed the body and said that the bullet entered his right jaw and ranged upward. Following the shooting, Neyland called Sheriff U. T. Downs and told him he had shot a man and wanted to surrender. The Sheriff went to the scene and Neyland and several witnesses told him that Holt had struck Neyland on the back of the head with a stick. As Neyland turned, they said, hold struck him on the nose and Neyland pulled his gun and shot him. Neyland and witnesses told Sheriff Downs that no words passed between the two men. Neyland told the sheriff that he shot in self defense. An ambulance rushed Holt to the hospital and Sheriff Downs took Neyland there where his injuries were treated. He suffered an injury to the nose and laceration on the back of his head. Holt formerly operated the Circle Beer Garden, located just out of the city limits of Alexandria.
