He was born in Jena in 1910. Harrell was the son of former Jena Times publisher H. S. Harrell, who operated the newspaper from 1907 to 1923. It was during this time that Albert was born to the publisher and his wife. The senior Harrell operated the paper by himself from 1907 to 1916 when H. Street Hudspeth came to Jena and purchased half interest in the paper. Apparently, Harrell sold out to Hudspeth in 1923 and moved his family to Shreveport where he worked for the newspaper in that city. On a trip to Jena a few years ago, Albert Harrell visited the present editor and publisher and recalled about his early memory of Jena. He said the family lived across the street from the parish courthouse, which had just been erected. The parish was created the year Albert was born, in 1910. The courthouse was built at that time. The younger Harrell was 13 years old when he moved from Jena with his family.
