Hatfield, 29, of Nebo Route, who was killed instantly in automobile accident Saturday morning on Highway 19 near White Sulphur Springs, were held Monday afternoon at the Nebo Baptist Church with the Rev. T. J. Ratcliff, pastor of the church, officiating. Military rites at the graveside were held under the auspices of the Whatley-Flaherty Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, John White the commander. Interment was in the Graham Cemetery under the direction of Kinner and Stevens Home for Funerals, Jena. The fatal accident occurred Saturday morning about 4 a.m. when a car driven by Hatfield ran off the highway, finally crashing into a pine tree. The only other occupant of the car, Lavoid Lively, also of the Nebo community, was seriously injured. Lively is reported to be recovering at the Baptist Hospital in Alexandria, where he was confined on the day of the accident. The car, a 1942 Ford, was severely damaged in the mishap. Hatfield was a World War II Army veteran, with three years of service, two years and three months in the Pacific theater. He was discharged honorably on Nov. 20, 1945. He held the APTO Medal, the Philippines Liberation ribbon, and the World War II Victory medal, as recognition of his service. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Paul Hatfield, of Nebo Route. Seven brothers, Sgt. James Hatfield, El Paso, Tex.; Sgt. Owen Hatfield, home on leave from Korea; Herman Hatfield, Boston, Mass.; Clyde Hatfield, Baton Rouge; Harland Hatfield, Nebo Route; Willie Hatfield, now in Cuba; and Edward Hatfield, Nebo Route. Two sisters, Mrs. Irma Mae McLendon, Pollock, and Ila Hatfield, Nebo Route. His grandmother, Mrs. Ila Graham, and a host of other relatives and friends. One sister, Edna Hatfield, precedes him in death. Pallbearers at the funeral were six of his fellow members of the VFW, Claud Ray, Monis Graham, Lee Whatley, Leonard Ray, Tom Allen, and Oscar Allen.
