All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Date: December 1, 1938, Thursday Headline: Youth Killed While Rabbit Hunting Monday Sub-Headline: Gun Accidentally Discharged by Companion at Wallace Ridge A sad accident occurred Monday about 9:00 a.m. in the Wallace Ridge Community in Catahoula Parish, when Elmore McFarland, 18 years of age, was shot and instantly killed by a companion by the name of Hudnall, while out rabbit hunting. Young McFarland was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom McFarland, and was born and reared in the Wallace Ridge Community. Particulars of the shooting were not obtainable other than it was purely accidental. However, it is reported that the young men were rabbit hunting and in some manner the gun was discharged, striking McFarland in the neck and shoulder at close range. Funeral services were held at Manifest Tuesday afternoon by Rev. Miley, of Harrisonburg interment was made in the Manifest Cemetery under the direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena. Besides his father and mother, young McFarland is survived by two sisters, Misses Odelle and Edith McFarland.
