Date: December 5, 1935, Thursday Headline: In Memory of Carley M. McCartney The son of Joseph McCartney was born October 31, 1850, at Meridian, Miss. He moved near Olla, La., in 1870. He had four brothers, Joe, Frank, Pink, and George, and sister, Mrs. Joshua Miles. These all preceded him to the grave, Uncle Charley being the last of the old McCartney family. He was married to Miss Maggie Kees, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Kees, of Olla, October 3, 1880. She died December 24, 1924. To this union were born four sons, John who died in 1906; Carey and Charley, Jr., of Urania, Stacia of Delhi, one daughter, Mrs. Essie Fletcher of Urania. He has 13 grandchildren living and two dead, also four great-grandchildren and one dead. He professed faith in Christ and was baptized into the fellowship of the Pine Hill Baptist Church of Urania, October 14, 1871, and he lived a consecrated life and was known as a leader in Christian work from the time he professed faith until the end of his life here on Earth. He taught singing schools and led singing throughout the Ouachita Association and he loved to sing those old sons seasoned with the grace of God, such as, "How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds," and "Pass Me Not O' Gentle Savior". In 1910, he moved to Franklin Parish near Crowville, La., after moving from this parish. He looked forward to the revival meeting at Pine Hill Church to which he attended regular up to his death failing but a few times in this 25 years. He also transferred his membership from Pine Hill to Crowville in 1910, and in 1925, he transferred his membership to Rebecca Church and was ordained a deacon in 1927, to which church he held his membership at the time of his death. After the death of his wife, he made his home with his son, Stacia, of Delhi. La., where he died at the age of 84 years, 11 months, 23 days. His body was brought back to Pine Hill Church and laid by the side of his good wife, in the presence of a host of relatives and friends, to await the resurrection of the redeemed when his Savior shall come with the hosts of heaven for the redeemed of the Earth. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. J. Albritton, Jena, La., his pastor, assisted by this writer. Uncle Charley, as he was known, by all, was loved, honored and respected by all who knew him and they who knew him best loved him best. He ever lived a life worthy of imitation. His good counsel was sought by both young and old, and when Uncle Charley spoke, all gave heed, believing what he said was true. May his children, grandchildren, and other relatives take courage, look forward to the coming of his Lord when all shall be gathered where there will be no more parting hands, tears, nor heartaches. Sleep on, dear Uncle, and take thy rest; it won't be long until he will call for the rest. R. M. Doughty
