He was born Jan. 14, 1918, in Clermont, Ky. Newell served in the U. S. Army during World War II and remained in the Army for 13 years. After completing his college education at LSU in Baton Rouge, he worked as an electrical engineer for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development until his retirement. He was a member of the Baton Rouge Masonic Lodge and had lived in Arcadia for the past eight years. Services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 6, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home Chapel in Arcadia with Rev. Jeff Hoffman officiating. Burial followed in the Green Oaks Memorial Park Cemetery in Baton Rouge on Friday, January 7. Survivors include his wife, Billy Walters Newell of Arcadia; one son, Harry Samuel Newell, Jr., of Arcadia; one stepson, Mike Walters of Bedford, Texas; two sisters, Kate Ernst and Eleanor Ratterman, both of Louisville, Ky.; one brother, Fred Hatfield of Shelbyville, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.
