From The Jena Times - Olla Tullos Signal Date: November 29, 2000 Front Page and continued on page 3A Long tine Jury Secretary dies; services held Ellen Janet Oswalt, a 19 year employee with the LaSalle Parish Police Jury and a former Secretary Treasurer, died Sunday morning following an extended illness. Oswalt, 52, of Jena, died at 11:57 a.m., Sunday, November 26, 2000, at the Willis Knighten Hospital in Shreveport where she had been in critical condition since a liver transplant on October 21st. Janet was employed by the Police jury for the past 19 years, working her way up through the ranks of the office and had served for the past several years as Secretary-Treasurer. Her health forced her to the sidelines earlier this year and on September 25, 2000, she resigned her position with the Jury. Jurors and courthouse personnel honored the retiree with a reception at the courthouse on October 9th at which time plaques were presented from the Jury honoring Janet for her loyal and dedicated service. She was also a member of the East Jena Baptist Church where she was an active member of the church choir. Janet was born September 10, 1948, at Jena to the union of Roy Lee "Bud" Keen and Inez Bignar Keene. Her father proceeded her in death by two days, passing last Friday. Service were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, at East Jena Baptist Church with the Revs. Craig James and Johnnie Phillips officiating. Interment followed at the Jena Cemetery under direction of Kinner and Stevens Funeral Home of Jena. Survivors include her husband, H. L. Oswalt of Jena; one daughter Paulette Welch of Jena; two sons, Stephen Oswalt of Bluntstown, Fla., amd Bradley Oswalt of Jena; her mother, Inez Bignar Keene of Jena; two sisters, Betty Louise Long of Jena and Pamela Kay Kane of Shreveport; one brother, William Roy Keene of Shreveport; and two grandchildren. Pallbearers were Burl Clark, Dudley Walker, marty Cooper, Lionel Posey, Raymond Miller, and Johnnie Hutchins.
