Harper, 42, was handed in the jail yard here last Friday at 12:07 p. m., for the murder of Hardy Pepper at Sikes on December 17 of last year. The killing occurred at a dance. The condemned man ran up the steps to the gallows without assistance, and showed no signs of fear as the black cap and noose were adjusted. When he was taken from the jail Harper paused on the steps and made a brief talk to the crowd urging them to "go straight."
