Smith, 77, of Jena, died at 6:20 p.m., Wednesday, January 19, 2000, in LaSalle General Hospital of Jena. He was retired from the public works department for the Town of Jena, a retired logger and a member of East Jena Baptist Church where he served as custodian for 29 years. He was also a veteran of the United States Army. Services were at 2 p.m., Friday, January 21, at East Jena Baptist Church with the Revs. Craig James and Johnnie Phillips officiating. Interment followed in Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Jena under direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena. Survivors include two daughters, Jean Smith of Jena and Grace Wiley of Larto; four sons, Charles Milton Smith of Pineville, Rev. Curtis Smith of Waterproof, Jimmy Dale Smith and Donnie W. Smith, both of Jena; two sisters, Lessie Ford and Bessie Brown, both of Jonesville; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Charles Edwin Smith, Jimmy Dale Smith Jr., Shayne Smith, Johnathan Smith, Marvin Clark and Dustin Clark. Honorary pallbearers were Ronald Andrews, Burl Clark, Doc Eubanks, Dudley Walker, Dugan Powell, Sonny Smith, Billy D. Boyd, and Carlos M. Boyd.
