All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Date: April 11, 1940 Headline: Negro is Fatally Injured in Fall From Train Tuesday Jake smith, colored, of Trout, lost his left leg and received bruises and cuts about the body, when he fell from an L and A Freight Train, the "Redball." He died Tuesday afternoon at the Pineville Hospital. The accident occurred about one-half mile east of the Jena Depot, when Smith was said to have fallen from the train while asleep. He was said to be returning to his home in Trout from Ferriday. Dr. J. M. Kittrell of Good Pine was called immediately and administered first aid. Kinner and Stevens conveyed the victim to the Pineville Hospital for treatment. There were no witnesses to the accident, but the brakeman, riding the caboose of the train, saw the man lying beside the track as the train passed and signaled the engineer who stopped the engine to investigate.
